Donald Francis Newcomer of Queen City entered into eternal rest Tuesday June 2, 2009 at Boone Hospital in Columbia.
The youngest son of Alfred "Buck" and Precious Pearl (Gillispie) Newcomer, he was born March 22, 1928 in Adair County, MO. Don attended the Hazel Creek rural school. On March 16, 1950 he was married to Rosalie Thompson and to this union four children were born, Julie Ann Dodd of Virginia, IL, Donald Lawrence Newcomer of Metanza Beach, IL, Stuart Allen Newcomer of Chanderville, IL and Brenda Lee Newcomer who preceded him in death in 1951 at the age of seven months. On February 6, 1960 Don was married to June E. Merrill who preceded him in death on November 16, 2000. Also preceding him in death were, his parents, two infant brothers, Warren and Leon, a brother, John. D. Newcomer in 1997, four sisters, Nee Loetta Epperson in 1973, Leona Lucy Benefiel in 1981, Dorothy Juanita Bowers in 1984 and Gerlene Lena Solomon in 2001 and one grandson in infancy.
In addition to his three children Don is survived by several nieces and nephews, a sister-in-law, Juanita Newcomer and a brother-in-law, Wayne Bowers, eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Don worked in heavy equipment for John Deere. He enjoyed playing the guitar, singing and fishing. He was a master story teller and loved to entertain by doing so. Following the death of his wife June he moved to Virginia, IL for a short time and then to Queen City where he made his home with a niece and nephew before entering the Schuyler County Nursing Home where he lived the past three and one half years. He was able to provide most of his own care and was very happy there. He once said "I wouldn't leave here for a brand new house". He was a very good friend to all the employees and they returned his love and friendship. On the day of his admission to Boone Hospital he said "tell all my girl friends at the Nursing Home hello". He will be missed and remembered with love.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday June 5, 2009 at Davenport Memorial Park with Pastor Sonny Smyser officiating. Interment will be in Davenport, Iowa at the Davenport Memorial Park, in the Garden of Love.
