Norma Faye Owings

September 2, 1930 — June 30, 2016

Norma Owings, 85, of Unionville, MO, passed away at the Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, MO, on Thursday, June 30, 2016.

Norma Faye (Ricketts) Owings was born in Woodson County, KS, on September 2, 1930, the daughter of Rosco Esmond and Lydia Ellen (Smith) Ricketts, who preceded her in death. She was reared in central Kansas and graduated from Geneseo High School. She moved to Kansas City, MO, where she worked as a secretary in a milk testing plant. She met Fon Owings and her pretty red hair and blue yes pulled Fon in. Norma and Fon were married in Kansas City, MO, on February 4, 1951, and he survives at home.

Norma and Fon moved to Columbia, MO, for Fon to attend Veterinarian school. Norma worked while Fon was in school and when he graduated they moved to Keytesville, MO, to open a practice. They stayed there briefly and then moved to Putnam County where they have resided since. Norma ran the Vet office and became so knowledgeable that she was often counted on for sound animal care advice. She managed the office, her family, and her community life with a gracious smile and kindness, and with a little twinkle in her eye. She and Fon were generous supporters of the youth in the Community. Norma was a 4-H leader for many years and could lead in anything from cattle to sewing. She served on the Putnam County Hospital Board for over 20 years and was active in the Unionville Lady Golfers. She enjoyed playing Pitch and taking motion pictures of her children. Norma was a long time member of the Unionville United Methodist Church.

In addition to her husband, Norma is survived by sons Steve Owings and wife Vicki of Clayton, MO; Roger Owings and wife Terry and Gerald Owings and wife Nancy all of Unionville, MO; and a daughter, Teresa Harbert and husband Lennis of Unionville, MO. Twelve grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren also survive as well as a brother, Eugene Ricketts and wife Karen of Little River, KS; and two sisters, Winona Solar and Gaye Dyke, both of Boca Raton, FL. Norma was preceded in death by a son, Rex, who died at child birth, and Fon’s parents, Roy and Grace Owings.
