Loyal Don Rowland 65, of Greentop passed away Wednesday (June 10, 2009) in Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville.
The son of Orval Wesley and Golda Ethel (Veach) Rowland, he was born November 5, 1943 in Putnam County, MO. On June 6, 1971 at Queen City he was united in marriage to Geraldine Schmitter who survives. Also surviving are two brothers, Loren Lee "Bill" Rowland and wife Betty and Jerry Leon Rowland and wife Jill both of Queen City; three sisters, Melba Lavell Rowland of Queen City, Loretta Mae Cherry and husband Bob of Las Vegas, NV and Lily Janetta Smith and husband Jack of Lancaster, MO; one brother-in-law, Lavern Mathes of Queen City, two sisters-in-law, Alice Rowland of Davenport, IA and Martha Rowland of Marshfield, MO; also a sister-in-law, Marguerite Moore of Kirksville and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Rita and Bill Crane of Arthur, IL along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Roy Leslie "Jack" Rowland and Robert Lowell Rowland, one sister, LaVee Jewell Mathes, two nephews, Dennis Cain and Roger Baker and a niece, Billie Jean (Baker) Calef.
Don grew up at Graysville and attended the Graysville, Livonia and Unionville schools graduating from the Unionville High School with the Class of 1961. He then moved with his parents to Memphis, TN where he worked in Denton's Dental Laboratory while attending Mid-South Bible College. He returned to Queen City in the mid 1960's where he was the Pastor of the Greentop Good Shepherd Church until 1987. During this time he divided his time with the Refuge Community Church where he was still Pastor at the time of his death. He worked in Bible Schools and Bible Camps during the summers serving at Camp Victory in rural Livonia for forty years. He also spent several years at Camp Joy in Ava, MO.
He was on the Greentop Senior Housing Board for a number of years where he served as Chairman of the Board. He was a carpenter, electrician, plumber and handy man for Greentop and the surrounding communities. He was in charge of maintenance at Bill Frick's Low Income Housing and College Apartments. One of his greatest joys was his trip to Israel, Turkey and Amsterdam.
Don cared and was concerned about others giving no thought of himself, and his greatest love was his work for his Lord Jesus Christ. He was a loving, caring compassionate man who will be sorely missed by a host of family and friends.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday (June 14, 2009) in the Dooley Funeral Chapel with Evangelist Oscar Cunningham officiating and Rev. Boyd Halford assisting. Music will be furnished by Susan Lewin singing, "Wonderful, Wonderful Jesus" and "Safe In The Arms Of Jesus" with Donald Cooper organist. Interment will be in the Rose Cemetery at Graysville, MO.
Pallbearers will be Shane Rowland, Ricky Rowland, Tony Rowland, James Crane, Paul Moore and Ricky Greenstreet.
Visitation will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Saturday (June 13, 2009) with the family receiving friends at that time in the
