Doris L. Whalen, 93 passed away Thursday (July 28, 2016) at the Schuyler County Nursing Home.
The daughter of Claude and Maude (McAnulty) Dunn, she was born February 21, 1923 in Baring, MO. On October 14, 1946 in Baring, MO she was united in marriage to Paul Whalen.
Doris is survived by her children, Larry Whalen of St. Louis, MO, Edith Bowling of Lancaster, MO and Sandi Plank and husband Lyndell of Quincy, IL; three grandchildren, Shaelene Plank of St. Louis, MO, Kyle Bowling of Grimes, IA, and Laci (Jeff) Tallman of Lancaster, MO; six great grandchildren, Tanner Gottman, Zoe Bowling, Carson, Avery and Kelsey Tallman, and Corwin Plank; and two sisters, Joan Hurley of Willowbrook, IL and Joyce (Bill) Holdren of Baring, MO.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Paul; one daughter at birth, Nancy Whalen; and two sisters, Verlee Delaney and Velma Aldridge.
Doris was born and raised in Knox County and graduated from the Baring High School. She worked for Shaeffer Pen during WWII. Married soon after the end of WWII, Doris and Paul set out on the adventure that is life. Paul being a basketball player, coach, teacher, principal and superintendent at several school districts. Doris held many secretarial type positions as they moved around the Midwest. While Paul ran the schools, Doris ran the family. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she was the glue that held the family together. Doris and Paul retired in 1993 and moved to Quincy, IL.
Her love and spirit will live forever in the family she has left behind.
She was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church in Quincy, IL. She was a very dedicated volunteer with the Meals on Wheels, at John Wood Community College and with Chaddock in Quincy. She enjoyed her family, emailing friends, dancing and games on her computer.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday (August 1, 2016) at Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home. Burial will be in the St. Aloysius Cemetery in Baring, MO.
Visitation with the family will be from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home.
Memorials in memory of Doris are suggested to the Schuyler County Nursing Home or the St. Aloysius Cemetery.
