George McCullar

George McCullar passed away at the Corydon (IA) Nursing and Rehab Center on Thursday, June 25, 2009. He had been a resident there for a short time. George was 84 years of age.
George Austin McCullar was born May 21, 1925 in Bokoshe, OK, the son of Walter and Winnie (Hardin) McCullar who preceded him in death. He attended country schools in Hannah, OK, until the 8th grade when he entered the work force. On June 3, 1950 he married Jennie Lind Harden in Fowler, CA, and she preceded George in death on August 8, 1998.
George and Jennie lived in California for a time and then moved to Chicago, IL, where George worked as a custodian at Elmhurst College. They divided their time between California and Chicago during their married life. George worked as a custodian in various facilities including banks. He attended The Pentecostal Bible Institute in Gilroy, CA, and was engaged in lay preaching during his lifetime. George retired in Chicago and moved to Humeston, IA. He had lived in Corydon the past 5 years.
George was born again in January of 1946 and was a faithful Christian and church member at THE Church of God in Corydon. He was a wonderful prayer warrior and never tired of engaging in personal evangelism, sharing his faith with anyone he would meet. He enjoyed southern gospel music and especially enjoyed watching the Gaither Homecoming series.
George is survived by his son, John McCullar and wife Robin of Glenwood, MO, and granddaughter Roberta McCullar of Lancaster, MO. Four brothers also survive and they are Ray McCullar and wife Ollie of Selma, CA; Ulyss McCullar of the state of Arkansas; Olen McCullar and wife Karen of Seminole, OK; Wesley McCullar and wife Janet of Atwater, CA. George is also survived by brothers-in-law Rev. Billy Skipper and wife Sharon of Oswego, IL, and Jerry Skipper and wife Dixie of Naotize, KS; as well as a sister-in-law, Nancy Thompson and husband Bill of Centerville, IA. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents and wife, George was preceded in death by a brother, Earl McCullar and an infant brother, Cecil McCullar as well as two sisters Eunice Gumm and Flora Porter, several sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law.
Funeral services for George McCullar were held at Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 with visitation on Monday evening. Pastor Rebecca Robb conducted the services assisted by Rev. Billy Skipper and Pastor Robin McCullar. Music was provided by Sharon Skipper who played and sang “Meeting in the Air” and “Unclouded Day.” “Shall we Gather at the River/Will the Circle be Unbroken” was played as a recorded number. Casket bearers for George were Jerry Skipper, Bill Thompson, Rev. Billy Skipper, Pastor Joe Hayes, Richard Gerdes and Dwight Robb. Gary Carter was an honorary casket bearer. Interment was in the Leon (IA) Cemetery.
Memorials for George McCullar are suggested to THE Church of God in Corydon, IA, and may be entrusted with Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO, 63565.
