Martin Cecil Hackney

Martin Cecil Hackney, 81, of Unionville, MO, passed away at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, MO, on Saturday, October 1, 2016.

Martin Hackney was born July 11, 1935, in rural Putnam County the son of Austin and Pearl (Alexander) Hackney who preceded him in death. Martin attended the Triumph Rural School in Putnam County and graduated from Unionville High School in 1953. Mr. Hackney joined the United States Army from 1958 to 1960. He started carrying mail for the Unionville Post Office soon after leaving the Army. He then worked as a window clerk until he retired from the post office in 2002. Martin lived and farmed in the Lemons area all his life. He enjoyed his livestock, especially the Charlois cattle and his cats. After retirement Martin Hackney enjoyed socializing and playing cards around town. He attended the First Christian Church in Unionville and was baptized there.

Martin is survived by two sisters, Lelah Hickman of Princeton, MO, and Laura Malcolm of West Point, IA. Four nieces and nephews survive as well; Tammy Luna and husband Armando, Sean Malcolm and wife Allison, Renae Huebner and husband Cole, and Jerad Malcolm. Eight great nieces and nephews also survive as well as uncles Hercel Alexander and Hallie Alexander and an aunt Helen Deeds.

In addition to his parents, Martin was preceded in death by an infant sister, Doris Jean Hackney and brother, Wayne Austin Hackney.

Funeral services for Martin Hackney will be at Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 5, 2016. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the Lemons Cemetery.
