Jennie Sue Ross, 80 of Kirksville passed away Tuesday (October 18, 2016) at her home.
The daughter of Norvell Christian and Ruth Ellen (Hostler) Allen, she was born July 9, 1936 in Kirksville, MO. On June 9, 1956 in Kirksville, MO she was united in marriage to Sydney Phillip Ross, DO.
Sue is survived by her husband, Sydney; one daughter, Whitney Allyson (Ross) Mauer DVM, PhD. And her husband, Michael Louis Mauer, DVM; four grandsons, Michael Ross Mauer, Matthew Phillip Mauer, Maxwell Philip Ross, and Dane Robert Ross; two brothers, William Hostler Allen and wife Gabi, and Thomas Norvell Allen and wife Jeannie; close friends, Mary Giovannini and Delores McClimans; and her pets, Bitsy and Jet.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one son, Phillip Allen Ross, DO.
Sue graduated from the Kirksville High School with the class of 1954, she graduated with a BA from Northeast Missouri State University. She was an art teacher at the Kirksville Elementary School and the Lapeer High School in Lapeer, MI. She taught equestrian courses at Northeast Missouri State University, was a breeder and exhibitor of national champion Arabian horses, and owned and managed an equine boarding facility.
She was a member of Kirksville Trail Riders, P.E.O., Tri-Delta, Flint Institute of Arts where she was a docent and fundraising coordinator, and the Kirksville Arts Association where she was a past President and board member. She was interested in contemporary architecture, contemporary and Asian-inspired art acquired after living in Japan in 1964. She was a life long avid tennis player.
Sue was a kind, generous, helpful, happy, creative, funny, strong, loyal, level-headed, energetic, organized friend and confidant to many. She was a teacher and mentor to countless horse riders. And, she had amazing MacGyver-like skills in a pinch.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday (October 25, 2016) at the First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Aline Russell officiating.
Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Kirksville Arts Association.
