Max Hoskin, 78, of Unionville, MO, passed away at the Regency Care Center in Norwalk, IA, on Thursday, October 20, 2016. He had been a resident there for only brief time.
Max was born in rural Hartford, MO, on May 4, 1938, the son of Donald and Vivian (Mullenix) Hoskin, who preceded him in death. Max was raised by his maternal grandmother Nancy Anna (Montgomery) Mullenix, of Hartford. He attended grades one through eight in Hartford, beginning at age five. Max graduated from Unionville High School in 1955. Max married Marcia McCalment in Unionville, MO, on August 20, 1961, and she preceded him in death on April 12, 2009.
Prior to college, Max took a break, earning tuition funds by working in a factory with other former east end Putnam County residents in LaGrange, IL. He returned to the area, working for his uncle “Shockey” Mullenix in Kirksville, MO at the Mullenix Mobile Home and Service Station. Max made several round trips, serving as a “trailer jockey,” leaving Kirksville and returning from a mobile home factory in Great Bend, KS. Max continued working for Shockey while attending Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (now Truman State University) where he completed his Bachelor’s degree with a teaching certificate for secondary education in mathematics during 1961. He commuted from Stockport, IA, to Kirksville so that he could complete a Master’s degree in mathematics from that same school in 1964.
Max taught high school mathematics for two years in Stockport, IA, two years in Kirksville, MO, and 25 years at Ruskin High School in Kansas City, MO. He and Marcia returned to Putnam County after Max retired and built their home overlooking McCalment Farms. They joined Doc in operating McCalment Farms beginning 1993 and continued after the deaths of Doc and Virginia. Max was still operating the farm at the time of his death, raising and selling purebred polled Hereford breeding stock. Max and Marcia were long time members of the American Hereford Association. Max enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as fast cars and motorcycles.
Max is survived by two daughters, Lynn Loney and husband Randy of Louisburg, KS, and Marna Hoskin of Los Angeles, CA. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Ryan, Seth, Amaya, and Matthias Perkins. Several cousins also survive Max.
