Tharon Victoria Guffey, age 85, of Green City, MO was swept into eternity on Saturday, July 25, 2009 at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, MO.
Tharon was born April 17, 1924 in Pollock, MO the daughter of Ernest and Amy (Powell) Keller. She lived most of her life in the Pennville area and attended the Chappell and Victory Schools. On January 10, 1942 she was united in marriage to Murl Guffey of Green City at Milan, MO by Pastor C.L. Roland of the Assembly of God Church. Most of their married life was spent on a farm in the Pennville area. In 1946, they began singing on KIRX radio in Kirksville. In 1948, they moved to Del Rio, TX to pursue a lifelong gospel singing career. They returned to their farm in 1959. In 1960, they began an eighteen year career on KTVO television. They returned to KIRX radio in 1992 where their program continues to air.
Tharon was a gifted composer and poetry writer and recently compiled her writings in a 451 page book. God gifted Tharon with a beautiful singing voice, and she used this talent to glorify Him. She was an avid rock and shell collector and thoroughly enjoyed her crafts and attending craft shows. One of her greatest joys was taking her grandchildren to Spring Creek and her beloved cabin at Dark Hollow.
Tharon accepted Jesus as her personal Savior at the age of eighteen. She was a devout Christian and served Him faithfully throughout her life. Her greatest love was talking to others about her precious Lord.
Tharon is survived by her husband, Murl of Green City, a son Larry Guffey and wife Annie of Green City, a daughter Sharon Phipps and husband Jerry of Kirksville, MO, a son Terry Guffey of Atlanta, GA, and a daughter Murline O’Brien and husband Mark of Unionville, MO, nine grandchildren, Trisha Buck, Robin Feeney, Dawn Vieth, Brian Guffey, Matthew O’Brien, Melody O’Brien, Tina Phipps, Lisa Stevens, and Jeffrey Phipps, sixteen great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren, and one brother, Norman Keller of Milan, MO.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Theda Schoonover Rodgers and Marjorie Williams, two brothers, Maurice and Kenneth Keller, two granddaughters, Peggy Guffey and Michelle O’Brien.
Tharon will be sadly missed by all who new and loved her. Contributions may be made to the Chappell Cemetery in her memory.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday (July 28, 2009) at Glenn E. Kent & Son Funeral Home in Green City with Pastor Kenneth Lucas officiating. Music will be provided by the Vincent Family singing, “Supper Time”, “How Great Thou Art” and “The Old Rugged Cross”. Burial will be in Green Castle Cemetery in Green Castle, MO.
Pallbearers will be Brian Guffey, Matthew O’Brien, Jeffery Phipps, Keith Buck, Zack LoPresto, Kenneth Keller and John Keller.
Visitation with the family will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday (July 27, 2009) at the
Glenn E. Kent Funeral Home
