Phillip Calhoun

Phillip Nelson Calhoun (Phil), 68, of Greentop, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at Northeast Regional Medical Center.

The son of John Nelson and Wilda June (Barnett) Calhoun, Phil was born July 30, 1948, in Kirksville, MO. He was united in marriage to Tanna Graham on July 15, 1977 in LaPlata.

Phil is survived by his wife, Tanna; three children, Jill Moncrief and husband Brad of Queen City; Jana Calhoun and Scott of Queen City; and Chris Calhoun of Kirksville; one brother, Mike Calhoun of Queen City; five grandchildren, Tanner Renick, Mason Moncrief, Kaitlyn Hatfield, Maddox Berry and Tessa Berry; as well as many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father John in 1974, his mother Wilda in 1992 and his beloved cousin and best friend, Paul (Poss) Shumate in 2012.

Phil grew up in Queen City where he graduated from Schuyler R-I as a standout athlete. He attended Northeast Missouri State College (now Truman State University) where he played basketball and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Phil taught physical education and coached in both the LaPlata and Schuyler County School Districts before making a career change in 1982. He worked as a loan officer for thirty-five years and was still with Exchange Bank of Northeast Missouri at the time of his death.

Phil’s life was highlighted by his love of athletics. He played fast pitch and slow pitch softball, town team basketball and was a dedicated runner for many years. He dedicated his time and passion to coaching many baseball/softball and basketball teams for his children and grandchildren. He developed an intense love of golf and was instrumental in both establishing and designing the Lancaster Country Club in 1994. He was always involved in Schuyler County athletics, offering his services for many years as the scorekeeper for both the football and basketball programs. Phil was an enthusiastic supporter of Mizzou Tiger Athletics and was rarely seen without his beloved black and gold.

Phil was a proud father and grandfather. His greatest joy was found in his grandchildren, whom he loved dearly.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2016, at the Dooley Funeral Home in Queen City, with Reverend Sonny Smyser officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., December 27, at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Lancaster Country Club.
