Maride Elam

Maride Arnold Elam passed away at age 90 on February 14, 2017 at University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia, MO.

The daughter of Bryan F. Arnold and Mabel Kelley Arnold, she was born May 22, 1926 in Greentop, MO. She was married to Charles (Bud) Elam, her husband of 69 years, on June 25, 1948 in Queen City, MO.

Maride graduated valedictorian from Greentop High School. She continued her education at Northeast Missouri State Teachers College and Kansas City General Hospital School of Nursing, Kansas City, MO, where she was president of her class. She was awarded a scholarship to Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where she completed additional training in the area of physical therapy.

After graduation Maride started her nursing career in industrial nursing at Clinton Foods in Clinton, Iowa. She later joined the nursing staff at Grim Smith Hospital and finally retired from Kirksville R-III School District in 1988, where she served as school nurse for many years.

Maride was very involved in the Kirksville community, where she was a member of the Adair County Historical Society, Kirksville Arts Association and Adair County Nutrition Board, serving on the executive board for several years. She also was a member of PEO chapter IG, 3 rd Contemporary Club, Sojourners Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Order of the Eastern Star, Northeast Missouri State University Dames, Delta Zeta and several bridge clubs.

Maride loved spending time with her family. Her granddaughters and her great-grandsons brought her much joy. She was an active member of First Baptist Church for many years and enjoyed reading and studying the Bible. Maride and Bud loved to travel both locally and abroad after their retirement. Antiquing was a favorite past time of both Bud and Maride.

In addition the her husband, she is survived by son, Barry Elam and wife Gail of St. Louis, MO; son, Garrett Elam and wife Mary of Kirksville; daughter, Paula Gericke and husband Ty of St. Louis, MO; five grandchildren, Rachel Scott and husband Nick of Lee’s Summit, MO, Elizabeth Oyler and husband Guy of Little Rock, AR, Emily Elam and husband Clark Johnson of St. Louis, MO, Sarah Elam and fiancé’ Justin Morgan of Little Rock, AR, and Taylor Gericke of Columbia, MO; three great grandsons, Carter Scott, Walter Scott, and Mason Oyler.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bryan F. and Mabel Kelley Arnold; her sister, Jennelee Geocke and an infant brother.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday (February 25, 2017) at Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home with Reverend Jason Marlin officiating. Burial will be in Park View Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Ty Gericke, Bryan Goeke, Nick Scott, Clark Johnson, Guy Oyler, and Justin Morgan. Honorary bearers will be Leticia Collop, Jackie Harrison, Laura Ruth Hulse, Marietta Jayne, Jan Hartje, Janice Legg, Vel Miller, Susie Neely, Diana Reynolds, Maurine Crawford, Artis Ball, and Jean Elliott.

Visitation with the family will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the
