Lucille Tipton

Olive Lucille Cooley Tipton passed away on September 15, 2009, at Putnam County Care Center in Unionville, MO. Lucille was born June 19, 1912, near Lucerne, MO, the daughter of David and Jalie (Strauser) Cooley. She was reared in the Lucerne area and attended grade school at Wilkes School and rode a horse for the four years she attended high school at Newtown, MO, graduating in 1930.
Lucille attended college at Kirksville and Kansas City, earning a teaching certificate and then taught at Wilkes School. Staying with her brother, Russel, and his wife, Rhea, in Kansas City, she developed her love of classical music when they took her to a concert where George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue was played and all the walls were lighted blue. It was one of the highlights of her youth and that is why this service starts with this brilliant classic.
Lucille was united in marriage to Noel Edwin Tipton on May 1, 1935, and they were married for 69 years. Lucille went to Putnam County Care Center in 2002 after her health failed. Lucille was a Christian woman of great moral virtue who always had a smile, a kind word, a fantastic memory, and took her faith very seriously. Lucille was a great cook in the kitchen and a great gardener with her flowers and vegetables. Her family was everything to her. She enjoyed receiving letters and loved doing crossword puzzles.
Lucille is survived by her son, Donald Tipton, and his wife, Eva, of Ft. Madison, IA; her daughter, Emma Lou Sauter, and her husband, Ed, of Jefferson City, MO; and her daughter-in-law, Beth Young, of Columbia, MO.
Her grandchildren are as follows: Tammy Hickman, Davin Tipton and his wife, Chris, Tara Tipton, Amber Montie and her husband, Matt, all of Columbia, MO; Ian Tipton of Jefferson City, MO; Dr. Lisa Rohrbaugh and her husband, Mark, of Olathe, KS; Dr. Allen Landers and his wife, Denise, of Auburn, AL; Noel Nott and his fiancé, Shannon Spence, of Gravois Mills, MO; Lee Nott and his wife, Jill, of Lenexa, KS; and Kimberly Calton and her husband, Darrell Calton, of Russellville, MO.
Lucille’s great-grandchildren are: Nicole Wooten, Ashley Grantham and her husband, Levi, Brandon Dittmer, Zachary and Gabriel Montie all of Columbia, MO; Nicholas and Benjamin Rohrbaugh of Olathe, KS; Allyssa and Nathan Landers of Auburn, AL; Cheyenne Nott and Riley Nott of Jefferson City, MO; Kelsey Dority, Chanch and Jaleigh Calton of Russellville, MO; and Wyatt Nott of Lenexa, KS.
Lucille is also survived by a great-great-grandchild, Aiden Grantham, of Columbia, MO.
Lucille was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Noel; her daughter, Romayne Tipton Landers; and her son, Paul Edwin Tipton; and a son-in-law, Raleigh Nott; two brothers, Ordea and Loren Russell Cooley; and three sisters, Alma Lowry, Fern James, and Vera Purdy James.
