Velma Erwin
Velma F. Erwin 88, of Jefferson City, MO formerly of Kirksville, passed away Friday, September 25, 2009, at the Heisinger Lutheran Home in Jefferson City, MO.
The daughter of Warren Orville and Mayme Ethel (Welker) Shahan, Velma was born September 25, 1921 in Greenfield, IA. On July 3, 1943 in Queen City, MO she was united in marriage to Richard A. Erwin who preceded her in death on July 25, 1991.
Also preceding her in death were her parents and two brothers, Lyle and Dale Shahan.
Velma is survived by one son, Richard Oliver Erwin of Greentop, MO; one daughter, Jeannie Bay Chambers and husband, Glenn of Columbia, MO; three brothers, Melvin Shahan of Charles City, IA, Donald Shahan and wife, Marilyn of Cedar Rapids, IA and Allen Shahan and wife, Janice of Winterset, IA; one sister, Eloise Gaeter and husband, Dwayne of Independence, IA; three grandchildren, Robert James Roemer of Greentop, MO, Matthew Jack Roemer and wife, Dana of Osceola, IA and Christina Jean Erwin of the state of Iowa; two great-grandchildren, Samantha Audry and Sarah Bay Roemer and several nieces and nephews.
Velma was reared in the Greenfield, Iowa area where she attended school before moving to Kirksville. She graduated from the Kirksville High School with the Class of 1940. Velma attended Kirksville State Teachers College (Truman State University) and taught school in the area. She was an Adair County residence for over fifty years. She was a homemaker and helped her husband on the farm which was in the Willmathsville area.
Velma belonged to the Willmathsville Community Club and the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association. She was a founding member of the Greentop and Willmathsville Fire District and was a 4H Leader when her children were young.
A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 28, 2009, at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home with Reverend Virgil Jones officiating. Music was provided by Lanna Novinger singing “Take My Hand Precious Lord” and “Beyond The Sunset”, accompanied by Dianthe Cable, organist. Burial was in the Park View Memorial Gardens in Kirksville.
Pallbearers were Randy Shahan, Scott Gaeter, Greg Shahan, Jeff Shahan, Doug Byrn and Brian Byrn.
Visitation with the family was held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of the
