Bessie Davis

Bessie Davis, 77, of Unionville, MO, passed away at the Putnam County Care Center on Sunday, October 11, 2009.
Bessie Bee (Fields) Davis was born in Lucerne, MO, on March 28, 1931, the daughter of Charlie and Bertha (Overton) Fields, who preceded her in death. She attended Lucerne High School where she was an outstanding basketball player, earning All-Conference honors and even playing on the boy’s team at times.
Bessie married Junior Dean Davis on January 7, 1950 and he preceded her in death on July 28, 1970. Bessie and Junior spent most of their married life living in various locations in Iowa and Missouri where Junior was a logger. Bessie often worked in the timber right along side her husband. She later became a nurses’ aide and medical technician at the Putnam County Care Center, the Bristol Manor, and at the Seymour nursing home. She also did home health care and retired in 2002.
Bessie was known as “Granny” to her family and friends. She was also known by the ever present pipe she smoked and by her zeal and competitive nature in playing cards, especially pitch, rook, and spades. She loved people and loved to take care of people, whether in a nursing home or just as a wonderful hostess in her home. There was always room for one more at Granny’s table. Granny also loved to watch westerns on television.
Bessie Davis is survived by her four children: Donald Davis and wife Debbie of Smith Station, AL; Linda Neville of Windsor, CO; Dale Davis and wife Kristi of Powersville, MO; and Jack Davis and wife Rebecca of Unionville, MO. Nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren also survive as well as one sister, Mary Lou Davis of Des Moines, IA.
In addition to her parents, three brothers and four sisters preceded Bessie in death.
Graveside services for Mrs. Davis will be at the Powersville Cemetery on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. Family and friends who wish to drive in procession to the cemetery should meet at the Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home at 12:15 pm on the day of the service. There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Foundation and may be entrusted with Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO, 63565.
