Raymond Howard (Sarge) Mayfield, 84 of Worthington, MO passed away Wednesday (October 21, 2009) at the Schuyler County Nursing Home.
Raymond was the born on June 9, 1925 in rural Green City, MO, the son of Harley Howard and Roxie Mae (Lamasters). He was united in marriage to Margretta (Maggie) Ziegler on July 16, 1947 in Garmisch, Germany who preceded him in death on October 24, 1997.
Raymond is survived by three sons, Helmond Mayfield and wife Lois of Braidwood, IL, Gary Mayfield and wife Patsy of Worthington, MO, Randy Mayfield and wife Barbara of Novinger, MO; four sisters, Mildred Ilean Dorsey of Murfee’s Boro, TN, Mary Rose Cake of Des Moines, IA, Ilah Jean Thompson of Nevada, IA, Shirley Ann Hall of Nevada, IA, 12 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Crystal Louise Barton, Beaulah Evaline Bartmess, Wanda Mae Klein and one brother, Russell Lee Mayfield.
Raymond was reared in rural Putnam County and attended rural schools. At the age of 18 he entered the Army and served in WW II and the Korea Conflict. He was discharge from the Army in 1966 after serving 23 years. After retiring from the service he moved to Joliet, IL and was employed with Catepiller Corp. for more than 20 years. In 1989 he moved to his present home in Worthington, MO.
A Prayer service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday (October 24, 2009) at the Dooley Funeral Home with Reverend George Bradburn officiating. Interment with Military rites will be in the Pleasant Home Cemetery west of Worthington, MO.
Pallbearers will be James Mayfield, Robert Mayfield, John Mayfield, Jonathan Mayfield, Raymond Mayfield and Scott Mayfield. Honorary bearers will be Gary JR. Mayfield and Tadd Mayfield.
The family will receive friend from 11:00 a.m. Saturday (October 24, 2009) until the time of the service at
