Horace Edward Cooper, 96 of rural Greentop, Missouri passed away Sunday, October 24, 2009, at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville.
The son of Byron Isaac and Cleo Virginia (Muncy) Cooper, Horace was born May 17, 1913 in Stahl, MO. On April 7, 1936, at the home of Reverend Pearly Lind in Queen City, MO, he was united in marriage to Helen Louise Miller who preceded him in death on January 4, 2009. Also preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, Hobert, Archie, Kyle and Walter Cooper and two sisters, Faith Hiatt and Kathryn Brown.
Horace is survived by one son, Charles E. Cooper and wife, Janet of Greentop, MO; one daughter, Cheryl Ann McAuley and husband, Miran of Greentop, MO; five grandchildren, Anna Bushnell, Michelle Cunningham, Kimberley Steen, Stephanie Cooper and Matthew McAuley; nine great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Mildred Cooper of Kirksville and several nieces and nephews.
Horace was reared in the Stahl Community and attended the Green Grove School and the Novinger High School. He farmed with his father and then went to Detroit, MI where he lived with his brother, Hobert, and was employed with General Motors from 1935-36. Horace moved back to the Van Wye place for four years. For ten years he worked at the Bowen Ranch for Frank Ladwig. In 1952 he and his wife purchased a farm east of Greentop, MO.
He was a member of the New Harmony Church and taught Sunday School there and at other churches. He was a 4H leader and had served on the Producer Creamery Board and the Willmathsville School Board.
A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, October 29, 2009, at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Chapel with Dan Todd officiating. Musical selections will be “Sweet Hour of Prayer” sung by Stephanie Cooper and “The Old Rugged Cross” sung by Lana Novinger and accompanied by Gwen Laudwig, organist. Burial will be in the Greentop Cemetery in Greentop, MO.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Laudwig, David Pulliam, Ralph Miller, Kermit Hiatt, Ron Pulliam and Larry Lay. Honorary bearers will be Mark Bushnell, Ryan Bushnell, Matthew McAuley, Bob Lindquist, Doug Lindquist, Brian Pulliam, Earl Miller, Calvin Yardley and Keith Steen.
Visitation with the family will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service on Thursday, October 29, 2009, in the chapel of the
