Albert “Shorty” Garr

Albert “Shorty” Garr passed away at his home, surrounded by his loving family and friends, on Monday, October 26, 2009, after a battle with cancer. He was 69 years of age.
Albert Lendo Garr was born in Putnam County, MO, on May 3, 1940, the son of Howard and Mamie (Bunnell) Garr, who preceded him in death. Shorty went to work in the coal mines of eastern Putnam County after his school years, descending into the mines with a pick and shovel to bring out the coal. He later worked operating a road grader with the special road district in Putnam County. Poor health forced him to early retirement, but Shorty continued to mow yards all around Unionville. He was good with his hands, whether working as a mechanic in rebuilding and repairing lawn mowers or doing wood working and other kinds of crafts. Shorty was an avid fisherman. He was a friendly person with a good heart who often provided transportation around town for others.
Albert married Opal Campbell on July 3, 1959 in Unionville, MO, and she survives in Unionville. Shorty is also survived by three sons: Tom Garr and his wife Connie, Robert Garr and his companion Annie Jarvis, and Joe Garr, all of Unionville. Annie’s two daughters, Comissa and Veroinca Darling survive Shorty. Sue Hicks, a special, loving friend, survives, as well as Sue’s daughter Dollie Walker.
Funeral services for Albert Garr will be at Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, on Thursday, October 29, 2009. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 28 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Burial will be Unionville Cemetery.
