Harold David Mathes 78, of Queen City passed away Friday November 13, 2009 in Northeast Regional Medical Center.
The son of George and Gertie (Pickering) Mathes, he was born March 30, 1931 at Graysville, MO (in Putnam County). On January 12, 1952 in Lancaster, MO he was united in marriage to Norma Evelyn Kramer who survives. They had been together 57 years.
Also surviving are four daughters, Karen Slaughter and husband Larry of Queen City, MO, Pamela Williamson of St. Louis, MO, Tammy Kerby of Glenwood, MO and Teresa J. Mathes of Littleton, CO; six grandchildren, Michael and Tara Leedom, Countri and Jeremiah Kerby and Kamela and Joshua Williamson; two great grandchildren, Tia and Easton Kerby; four step grandchildren, Christy Smyser, Wendy Williams, Rachel Dudley and Austin Slaughter; four step great grandchildren, Olivia and Lincoln Smyser and Ethan and Parker Williams; two sisters, Pauline Morgan of Ottumwa, IA and Valee McElfish of Spangle, WA, two brothers, Gerald Mathes and wife Delores of Livonia, MO and Ola Mathes and wife Elaine of Rockford, IL and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grand parents, two sisters, Emogene Williams and Icel Wilson and one brother, Ovid Mathes.
Harold attended school at Graysville, MO, and then went to work in the coal mines. At the age of 18 he went to work at John Morrell in Ottumwa, IA retiring in 1982 after thirty three years. From May of 1952 through May of 1954 he served in the United States Army and was stationed in San Francisco, CA. He was a member of the American Legion.
Harold enjoyed farming, loved raising cows and spending time with his grandchildren. He will be missed by many.
Memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday (November 17, 2009) in the Dooley Funeral Home with Pastor Sonny Smyser officiating. Military rites with follow the service.
Visitation will be at 2:00 p.m. one hour prior to the service at the
Dooley Funeral Home
