Edward Leroy VanSickle, age 87, of Kirksville, Missouri, formerly of Hurdland, Missouri, passed away Sunday, November 22, 2009, at Kirksville manor Care Center in Kirksville, Missouri. He was born February 25, 1922, at Hurdland, Missouri, the son of Bernard Edward and Nora Rehm VanSickle. He was united in marriage to Mary Wilburn Tracy on December 28, 1975, and she preceded him in death on March 13, 1996. He was united in marriage to Ruth Tague Hicks on February 26, 2001. Surviving are three step daughters, Anna Stone and husband Roger of Meadville, Missouri, Jean Fales and husband Ken of Gallatin, Missouri, and Maxine Farrar of Lebanon, Missouri, one sister Sharon Harrison and husband Robert of Unionville, Missouri, step grandchildren, Ryan Stone and wife Heather, Amy Stone, Debbie Nolan and husband Tim, Sheri Roach, Shelley Fales, Tracy Lawless and husband John, and David Farrar, fifteen step great grandchildren, two step great great grandchildren, five nieces and nephews, Craig Harrison and wife Jan, Chris Harrison and wife Debby, Curtis Harrison and wife Kim, Carla Long and husband Keith, and Carolyn Wilhite and husband Richard, and numerous great nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters Irene Bunch and Faye May. Mr. VanSickle was raised in the Hurdland area where he received his education graduating from the Hurdland High School. Leroy attended one year in an Agriculture School at Ames, Iowa. He served his country in the United States Air Corps during World War II. It was during this time he was an M.I.A. and P.O. W. Leroy was engaged in farming south of Hurdland most of his life where he raised registered polled short horn Cattle. He was also employed as a United States Postal Carrier for 32 years at Hurdland, Missouri. Leroy was a member of the D.A.V. Chapter # 48 at Kirksville, Missouri; Leroy enjoyed gardening, mowing his lawn and spending time with his family and friends. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 25, 2009, at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Kirksville, Missouri. Reverend David Howald will officiate the services. Burial with full Military Honors will be in the Veterans Garden of Honor at Park View Memorial Gardens. Casket bearers will be Ryan Stone, Tim Nolan, Craig Harrison, Chris Harrison, Curtis Harrison, and Rex Sykes. Honorary bearers will be Richard Harrison, Larry Sykes, Jim Bob Gonnerman, Larry Overstreet, Kenny Campbell, Lawrence Dixson and Zel Eaton. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 24, 2009, after 4 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri. Memorials in memory of Edward Leroy VanSickle may be made to Hospice of Northeast Missouri. Memorials may be left at or mailed to Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1, Edina, Missouri, 63537.
