John Stewart
John Stewart, 83, passed away at the Milan Healthcare Facility on Saturday, January 2, 2010. He had been a resident there for a little over a year.
John Porter Stewart was born in Sullivan County, MO, near Green City, on April 29, 1926, the son of Everett and Erma (Crouse) Stewart, who preceded him in death.
John was reared in Sullivan County and then joined the United States Army in 1945 where he served in Panama as a cook. He lived in Kirksville, MO, after his discharge where he worked at the Palace Bakery. He married Roseva Clay in Humphreys, MO, on July 3, 1947, and she survives at home in Unionville, MO.
John and Roseva moved to Kansas City, MO, where John worked for Buick, Pontiac, and Oldsmobile for four years. They then moved to Putnam County where John farmed and worked at Davis Chevrolet in Unionville. He then worked as a maintenance foreman for McGraw-Edison in Centerville, IA, until the plant closed. John was later employed in the funeral business working at Husted-Ingersoll, Comstock, and Luscan funeral homes.
John had a friendly, outgoing personality and a good sense of humor. He liked people and had a wonderful smile. John was good with his hands and enjoyed woodworking, deer hunting, and fishing. He was a member of the American Legion Post 34 in Unionville and the First Christian Church in Unionville.
In addition to his wife, John is survived by two daughters, Janet Roberts of Cassville, MO; and Judy McDannald and her husband Michael of Unionville, MO. John’s surviving granddaughters are Jessica Bryand and Jenna Smith. John has three great grandchildren, Chelsey Popanz, Madysin Popanz, and Brenna Bryand. A brother, Ernest Stewart and wife Cindy of Trenton, MO, also survives.
In addition to his parents John was preceded in death by seven sisters and one brother. A granddaughter, Kassie Smith, also preceded John in death.
Funeral services for John Stewart were held at Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, on Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at 1:00 pm. Visitation was Monday, January 4, from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Pastor Gene Weece conducted the services with music by Don and Vikki Hunt who sang “The Old Rugged Cross,” “Amazing Grace,” and “In the Garden.” Casket bearers were Howard Hughes, Phil Burns, John Stewart, Mike Berhorst, Chuck Snyder, Mark Kruzich, and Lee Berhorst. Interment was in the Unionville Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church in Unionville or Hospice of Northeast Missouri and may be entrusted with Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th, Unionville, MO 63565.
