Cecil P. Leigh, age 102 of Kirksville passed away Thursday, January 7, 2010, at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville.
The son of Miles and Elsie Elizabeth (Watson) Leigh, Cecil was born August 2, 1907 in East St. Louis, MO. On September 4, 1926 in Fort Madison, IA he was united in marriage to Blanche L. Pierrot and they enjoyed 78 years of marriage. She preceded him in death on March 12, 2005. Also preceding him in death were his parents, one daughter, Sharon Deaver and one sister.
Cecil is survived by his son-in-law, Don Deaver of Bettendorf, IA; three grandchildren, Teresa Mapes, Cherie Boydston and Bryan Deaver all of Bettendorf, IA; two great-grandchildren, Meikel and Natasha Boydston and three great-great-grandchildren. Cecil is also survived by his special friends, Bethany and Aaron Rye, Jack McVey, Dale and Karen Holliday, Bridget Morton and Carolyn Harding. A special thank you to all his special friends in Kirksville who looked out for Cecil.
Cecil moved at an early age to Fort Madison, Iowa where he attended school and graduated from the Fort Madison High School. He owned and operated a dry cleaning business in Keokuk, IA before moving to Kirksville where he became employed at the Propst Cleaners. When he could no longer work in the dry cleaning business, he became employed at Truman State University as head of maintenance until his retirement.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Kirksville and Kirksville Lodge #105 A.F.&A.M. where he had served as Worshipful Master. Cecil enjoyed having coffee at different restaurants and in the last years at HyVee. He enjoyed fishing, socializing and everyone he met was his friend. He really valued life and was very determined to live as long as he could.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, January 11, 2010, at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home with Reverend Richard Northcutt officiating. A Masonic Service will be conducted by Kirksville Lodge #105 A.F. & A.M. Musical selections will be “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace”. Graveside service and burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday, January 11, 2010, at the Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton, IL.
Visitation with the family will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday
