Robert Delton Mitchell 86 of Greentop passed away Monday (February 1, 2010) at Northeast Regional Medical Center.
Robert was born on May 23, 1923 in Putnam County, Missouri near Hartford, to John Delton and Nellie (Matheson) Mitchell.
He attended Halley grade school and Unionville High School. On April 4, 1942 he was married to La Vena Richardson in Kirksville, Missouri. They were the parents of three children, Billy D., Larry Bob and Brenda Sue.
He and his wife lived the first two years of their marriage on one of the Mitchell farms in the Hartford area. In 1944 he was drafted into the United States Navy and served in the Seattle, Washington area and with their young son, Billy D. the couple made their home in Seattle and Kirkland. In April of 1946 after his discharge they moved to Adair County where they spent nearly 19 years living in Novinger, where he took on the job training at Truitt Brothers garage and became an expert in auto rebuilding. In 1953 he established his own business, Mitchell Used Cars and when his two sons graduated from Novinger High School, they joined their father learning the business of used cars and rebuilding trade. They were very much his pride and joy, helping him in all phases of the business. In 1964 and 1965 after purchasing acreage one mile south of Greentop, the business moved and a new home was built at its present location where he stayed active in the business until several months ago when his health problems began. He enjoyed attending the Auto Auctions and the races and was his sons biggest fan in their auto racing.
Surviving are his wife, La Vena of sixty-seven years of the home; William (Bill) Mitchell and Larry Robert Mitchell and wife Joy both of Kirksville; seven grandchildren, Shane Western and wife Shelley of Kirksville, Sabrina D. Mitchell of Independence, MO, Jill Chainey and husband De Wayne of Springfield, MO, Shawna Hudson and husband Chad of Ft. Madison, IA, Tiffany Jo Mitchell of Kirksville, Michele Hope Mitchell of Columbia, MO and Mariah Gottman and husband Jordan of Springfield, MO; eight great grandchildren, Keely, Kaylee, Bo and Gunner Western, Calvin and Sophia Chainey, Brendan and Reese Hudson.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his daughter, Brenda Western in 1994, a daughter-in-law, Michele Mitchell in 2006, two brothers, Paul Matheson and Eldon Mitchell and two aunts, Icle Mc Fadden and Mary Lee Martin.
Robert will be cremated and no service will be held. Private burial will be held at a later date in the Greentop Cemetery.
