Hazel Lee Cichosz 73, of Unionville, MO, passed away quietly in her home on February 9, 2010, surrounded by her loving daughters. She had been battling breast cancer
Hazel Lee was a devoted Putnam County citizen her whole life beginning with her birth on September 24, 1936 in Putnam County, the daughter of Earl and Pebble Cleo (Miller) Knowles who preceded her in death. She attended school in Unionville and on September 15, 1962 Hazel married Leon “Chico” Cichosz in Putnam County. Hazel was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She spent most of her life as a homemaker tending to her children and grandsons. For a short while she worked at the McGraw/Edison Factory in Centerville, IA and for a time she owned and managed the “Polock Inn” in Unionville along side her husband. Together they greatly enjoyed golfing at the Unionville Country Club where Hazel became a member of the Lady Golfers. Hazel Lee enjoyed playing cards and games with her family, but especially enjoyed frequent visits from Autumn Hines who was dear to her heart.
Hazel Lee is survived by two daughters, Liz Valentine and husband Randy of Fort Scott, KS, and Leondra Sandstrom and husband Tedd of Olathe, KS. her surviving grandchildren are Lonnie Long and wife Jennifer, Pete Fotovich, Shannon Hathaway and husband Kyle, Tyler Valentine and wife Ashley, and Teondra and Sabryn Sandstrom. Hazel’s surviving great-grandchildren are Sadie and Trista Long; Chris, Tristian, and Brielee Fotovich; Treyton Valentine, and Kaelynn Hathaway. A brother, Raymond Knowles and wife Linda survive along with sisters Lucille Dodd, Marge Edwards, and Sylvia Speirs. A sister-in-law, Phyllis Knowles also survives as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Hazel was preceded in death by sons Junior Crable, Bobby Crable, and Edward J. Cichosz and a daughter Bunny Crable. Siblings, Almeda Wood, Mary Ruth Black, and J.D. Knowles also preceded her in death.
Funeral services for Hazel Chichosz will be at Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home on Friday, February 12, 2010, at 11:00 am with visitation on Thursday, February 11, 2010 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm.
Memorials for Hazel are suggested to Hospice of NE Missouri, KC Hospice & Pallative Care, or Cancer Action and may be entrusted to Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO 63565.
