Alvis Fred Mason, age 94, of LaPlata, died peacefully Tuesday (April 13, 2010) in the LaPlata Nursing Home.
Alvis was born October 3, 1915 south of Bevier, Missouri, the son of Fred and Lena Pearl (Baker) Mason. On October 1, 1938, in Jefferson City, Missouri, he was united in marriage to Mary Mildred Turner. Mary Mildred preceded him in death, November 16, 2003.
Surviving are three sons and their wives, Ronald (Pat) Mason of Iowa City, IA, Jerald (Beth) Mason of Rocheport, MO, and Dale (Becky) Mason of Pitman, NJ; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Mason of Arlington, VA, Steven Mason of Rolla, MO, Paula (Rob) Weeks of Morrison, CO, and Janet (Andy) Foldenauer of Midlothian, VA; five great grandchildren, Andrea Mason of Phoenix, AZ, Jackson Weeks and Keira Weeks of Morrison, CO, Alison Foldenauer and Lea Foldenauer of Midlothian, VA; three sisters, Cleva (Harold) Jones and Hannah Findling of Kirksville and Mary Goalder of Romney, W.V. and one brother, Raymond Richard (Betty) Mason of Phillipsburg, MO.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Emmett, Waldo, Arnold, Robert, and Prentis and two sisters, Cordelia and Esther; and one granddaughter, Angela Mason, who died in infancy.
Alvis spent his early years in the Bevier community until 1933 when he relocated to Kirksville. He was employed at the International Shoe Factory in Kirksville until drafted for military service during World War II, serving in the United States Army in the Pacific. In 1950 he purchased a farm near LaPlata where he and Mildred lived for 50 years. The last 9 years he lived in LaPlata. From 1959 to 1979 he was employed at Northeast Missouri State University. He was a skilled woodworker and avid gardener and an active member of the First Church of God of Kirksville. He will be missed by not only his family but by many others with whom he frequently visited.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday (April 17, 2010) at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Chapel with Reverend David Strong officiating. Burial will be in Park View Memorial Gardens, Kirksville.
Pallbearers will be Jeffery Mason, Andy Foldenauer, Steven Mason, Roy L. Turner, Gary Simmons and Terry Findling.
Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the
Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home
