Mary Riggs
Mary Riggs, 86, of Unionville, MO, passed away at the Putnam County Care Center in Unionville on Sunday, May 23, 2010. She had been a resident there for a short time.
Mary Kathaleen (Fitzwater) Riggs was born in Unionville, MO, on March 16, 1924, the daughter of Edd and Helen (Gilworth) Fitzwater, who preceded her in death. She graduated from Unionville High School in 1941 and on April 8, 1944 she married Lawrence Riggs in Pollock, MO, and he survives at home.
Mary and Lawrence lived and farmed the first 21 years of their married life north and west of the Midway area in Putnam County. They moved to Unionville in 1965 and Mary began work in the laundry at Putnam County Memorial Hospital. She worked there for 23 years, retiring from that occupation. She remained very active in her retirement years, attending garage sales, volunteering at the Bargain Barn, and faithfully attending the First Christian Church in Unionville. Mary also liked to read history and romance novels and play pitch. She greatly enjoyed the Putnam County Fair, often entering articles in the various contests.
Mary was a person with a sweet and loving disposition who enjoyed serving others.
In addition to her husband, those who survive Mary are her two sons, Jerry Riggs of Kansas City, MO; and Jack Riggs and wife Shirley of Independence, MO. Eight grandchildren survive: Keith Riggs, Kristopher Riggs and wife Julietta, Jenny Hopkins and husband Jim, Jaimee Wheat and husband Chris, Emily Cobble and husband Darrell, Dan Cohu and wife Brenda, John Riggs and wife Donetta, and Sara Kerby and husband Scott. Mary is also survived by 16 great grandchildren, a brother, Bill Fitzwater and wife Jean of Overland Park, KS; a sister, Patricia Taylor and husband Jim of Kansas City, MO; and a sister-in-law, Donna Fitzwater of Raymore, MO.
A brother, Bob Fitzwater, and a daughter-in-law, Nancy Riggs, preceded Mary in death.
Funeral services will be held at Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 11:00 am with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Unionville Cemetery.
