Mary Ellen Roof-Smith

Mary Ellen Roof-Smith, 75, of Unionville, MO passed away at the Boone County Memorial Hospital in Columbia, MO on June 26, 2010.
Mary Roof-Smith was born in Putnam County on November 18, 1934, the daughter of George and Jessie (Wymore) Perkins. Mary graduated from Unionville High School. On July 23, 1954 Wayne E. Roof and Mary were united in marriage. They spent over 40 years together and raised 5 children. When their children started school, Mary went to work for the Unionville school system in the food service program. After Wayne’s passing, Mary later married Glen Smith on September 1, 2005. Mary enjoyed traveling with her family and stayed faithful to the traditions and holidays she loved through the years. Mary was a member of the United Methodist Church where she was an active in the church and women’s group. Mary’s homemade pies and rolls were very popular in the community, especially when the bidding began at community fund-raisers. Mary spent countless hours playing games with her family and friends. It was her silent mission to teach her acquaintances her favorite game of pitch. Mary also enjoyed volunteering at the Senior Center. Above all Mary had an extreme love and dedication to her family.
Mary’s children are Eileen Byte and husband Bob of Centerville, IA; Carolyn Roof-Baker and husband Steve of Columbia, MO; Richard Roof and wife Donna of Boonville, MO; Linda Harlan and husband Steve of Unionville, MO; Dale Roof and wife Brandi of Adrian, MO; Cheryl Sherry and husband Bill of Orange, CA; and the late Steve Smith and surviving spouse, Lori of Menifee, CA.
Mary’s surviving grandchildren are Nicholas Roof, Seth Roof, Mason Harlan, Preston Harlan, Brett Roof, Caleb Roof, Joshua Roof, Kathryn Roof, Benjamin Roof, Tracy Byte, Bobby Joe Byte, Magen (Nick) Gicinto, Rachael (Ryan) Wedakind, Jesslyn (Cody) Ray, Adria (Luciano) Paesani, Ben Schreiber, Leah (Kory) Smith, and Mikki Sherry. Mary’s surviving great grandchildren are Ryder Eugene Harlan, Jesse Wedakind, Emily Byte, Cullia Byte, Zemirah Byte, Ryan Henderson, Dylan Paesani, Hailey Ray, Devin Ray, Noah Ray, and Jorian Smith.
Mary’s surviving brother is Riley Perkins and wife Darlene of Liberty, MO. Her surviving sister-in-laws are Livina Perkins, Polly Roof, Valee Roof, Betty Roof, Mary G. Roof, Wanda Roof, Rosemary Roof, and Mae Smith. Her surviving brother-in-laws are Basil Roof and Hallie Alexander.
She is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Surviving lifelong friends are Dixie Dickerson, Terri, Mick, and Brandon Williams.
In addition to Mary’s parents and her late husband, Wayne, she was preceded in death by Johnnie Perkins, Cleta Alexander, Leon Roof, Melvin Roof, Clifford Roof, Robert Roof, Ronald Roof, Phyllis Kelly, James Kelly, Roberta Roof, Steve Smith, and Robert Smith.
Memorials have been suggested to PC Senior Center, Unionville United Methodist Church, and Lemon’s American Legion and may be entrusted with Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO 63565.
