Pauline Roof

Pauline “Polly” Roof passed away at the Putnam County Memorial Hospital on Sunday, July 11, 2010. She was 82 years of age.
Pauline May (Crouse) Roof was born in Perry, OK, on May 26, 1928, the oldest child of Milford and Bernadine (Richards) Crouse. Her family moved from Perry to McPherson, KS, and then to Missouri. Polly attended Anspach rural school and then she and her sister Doris rented an upstairs room in Lemons while attending Lemons High School where she played basketball and graduated in 1946 with a graduating class of four.
On June 21, 1946, she married Edwin Leon Roof, who preceded her in death on January 16, 2010. This union was blessed with two sons.
Polly was a homemaker and gardener. She enjoyed cooking and loved having her guests share homemade meals and desserts during a visit. She enjoyed working in her garden and canning the fruits and vegetables. She liked playing cards, keeping track of scores, so she could always remind Leon which team had won the most games. She loved her granddaughters who were often overnight guests at her house where she prepared all their favorite foods and the girls always wore one of her nightgowns. The light of her life were her twelve great-grandchildren, who affectionately called her Granny.
Polly is survived by her two sons: Carroll Roof and his wife Jeneen; and Ronny and his wife Linda, all of Unionville, MO. Also surviving are her granddaughters, Angie (Roger) O’Reilly of Unionville, MO; Debbie (Todd) McCubbin of Columbia, MO; Mendi (Mike) Rathgeb of Edwardsville, IL; and Kristen (Craig) Liesen of Quincy, IL.
Surviving great grandchildren are Sydney, Tori, and Trey O’Reilly; Avery, Mya, and Tate McCubbin; Logan Livia, Gabby, and Greyson Rathgeb; and Chloe and Courtney Liesen. Also surviving are her siblings: Doris Parsons of Lemons, MO; Bonnie (Earl) Robinson of Des Moines, IA; Gary (Linda) Crouse, Carolyn (Jim) Grimes, and Sandra (Jerry) Crawford, all of Unionville, MO; a sister-in-law Elaine Crouse of Stansberry, MO. She is also survived by Leon’s family whom she considered her own: brothers-in-law, Basil (Wanda) Roof, Hallie Alexander, and Glen Smith; sisters-in-law Betty Roof, Valee Roof, Mary Grace Roof, Rosemary Roof, and Irene Spring. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Kenneth and Galen Crouse, and an infant brother. Also preceding her in death were brothers-in-law: Wayne Roof, James Kelly, Clifford Roof, Melvin Roof, Robert Roof, Ronald Roof, and Eldon Parsons; and sisters-in-law: Mary Roof-Smith, Phyllis Kelly, and Cleta Alexander. A niece, Roberta Lynn Roof, and a nephew, Todd Grimes also preceded her in death.
Funeral services for Polly Roof will be held at Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at 11:00 am with visitation on Tuesday, July 13 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Interment will be in the Lemons Cemetery.
Memorials for Polly Roof are suggested to the Lemons Cemetery or the Lemons Legion/Community Center and may be entrusted with Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th, Unionville, MO, 63565.
