Joan Weerts, age 76 of Kirksville passed away August 27, 2010 at her home.
She was born September 29, 1933 in Newark, New Jersey, the daughter of Henry and Mae Belle Metzger. Joan married Richard Kenneth Weerts on December 22, 1956 in Fanwood, New Jersey.
Joan is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Lynn and Randall Stephenson of St. Joseph, MO and Christie Ann Scott of Council Bluffs, IA, two sons, Lawrence of Kirksville and Andrew of Junction City, OR; seven grandchildren, Robert Grant Stephenson of St. Joseph, MO, Amanda Mae Stephenson of St. Joseph, MO, Jordan, Braden and Austin Scott of Council Bluffs, IA, Zachary Weerts of Ossining, NY and Kaili Jo Weerts of Kirksville; and a brother, Robert Metzger of Greenville, SC.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Joan graduated from Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School in Scotch Plains, New Jersey in 1952. She received her degree in Bacteriology from Cornell University, Ithica, New York in 1953. Joan was employed by the CIBA Pharmaceutical Company in Summit, New Jersey for several years before moving to Kirksville in 1961. She taught Bacteriology at the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, now A.T. Still University, during the period 1967-1975 and worked in the medical laboratories of Northeast Regional Medical Center during the period 1964-2008.
Joan was active member of the Master Gardner’s Club in Kirksville as well as in the area and state wide. Her interest in horticulture was extensive and she gave a number of presentations covered by this topic in local nursing homes. She enjoyed music and was a member of the Kirksville Community Chorus for a period of time. She had a great interest in animals and the work of the Humane Animal Society of Adair County and the Field of Dreams Animal Rescue.
Joan will be greatly missed by her children and grandchildren and her many friends.
It was Joan’s wish that her body be donated to medical science.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday (September 11, 2010) at Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home.
Visitation with the family will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the
