Basil Edwin Riley, age 82 of Kirksville passed away Thursday (September 9, 2010) at Twin Pines Adult Care Center.
Basil was born November 20, 1927 in Greentop, MO, the son of Elmer and Ona (McElhinney) Riley. He was united in marriage to Helen Lorene “Sis” Adkins Schopp in 1957. Together they raised four children.
Basil is survived by three daughters, Suzanne Bush and husband Michael of Montrose, CO, Pat Hipps and Tim Cottman of Quincy, IL and Teresa Hale and husband Rick of Kirksville; 15 grandchildren, Jennifer Deters, Shane Hipps, Travis Hipps, Tiffany LaBeth, Tyson Barnes, Tisha Sparks, Trent Riley Barnes, Richelle Mason, Ryan Hale, Lacey Miller, Dustin McKie, Ryan McKie, Shawn McKie, Michael A. Bush and Gabe Bush, 23 great grandchildren; one sister, Hilda Haunus of Tama, IA, three sisters-in-law, Colleen Hensley of Kirksville, Wanda Riley of Kirksville and Lucille Riley of Macon, MO; two brothers-in-law, Bill Adkins of Kirksville and Bud Adkins of Atlanta, MO and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son, Mark Schopp, five brothers, Brice, Lee, Dale, Forrest and Francis Riley and one grandchild, Jason Schopp.
Basil was raised in Greentop where he received his education. In 1945 he joined the U.S. Army and served two years in the Philippians. After serving his country he began his automotive career with Peterson Chevrolet in Greentop. He retired as service manager from Jim Robertson Chevrolet.
Basil was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Kirksville. He served as Elder and deacon and spent several years as chairman of the house and grounds committee. He was a member of the Kirksville Moose Lodge and the V.F.W. He was also proud to have been a Mason for 50+ years. He was an avid NASCAR fan, always rooting for Chevrolet.
Basil’s family remembers him best for his honesty, hard work, quick wit, faith and love of family. He had dedicated his life to serving others.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 12, 2010) at Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home with Reverend Michael McCormick officiating. Burial will be in Park View Memorial Gardens in Kirksville.
Visitation with the family will be from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 11, 2010) at the
Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home
