Steven Mayer, 84, of Unionville, MO, passed away at the Putnam County Care Center on Wednesday, October 13, 2010. He had been a resident there for less than two months.
Steven Leroy Mayer was born in Baring, MO, on February 12, 1926, the son of Stephen Gary and Mary Louise (Schlepphorst) Mayer who preceded him in death. He graduated from Baring High School and then joined the United States Navy where he served in the Pacific Theatre aboard the USS Mountrail. Steven worked for the railroad following his time in the service and on November 26, 1949, he married Margaret Rose Farley in Kirksville, MO. She preceded him in death on September 28, 1994.
Steven sold insurance for a brief time and then began a work career as a repairman with General Telephone. He worked there for over 20 years before retiring in 1974 due to medical reasons. He was responsible for keeping telephone lines open for the FBI during the Flight 11 disaster. Steven and Margaret had moved to Unionville in 1956.
Steven was an avid golfer, having won many tournaments and he had 3 holes in one to his credit. He also loved to fish and was a wonderful story teller, but he loved his family most of all. Steven was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, having served on the board there, as well as the American Legion and the Unionville Country Club, where he was a long time member.
Steven Mayer is survived by five children: Allen Mayer and his wife Connie; Connie Knowles and her husband Jerry; Lynn and her husband John Worley; and Kim Mayer, all of Unionville, MO; and Mitch Mayer and his wife Kim of Trenton, MO. Surviving grandchildren are Liz Mayer, Brian Mayer, Amy Norman and husband Joel, Coleman Mayer, Kia Mayer, Kelly Purdy and husband Mike, Erin Warnick and husband Todd, Derek Knowles and wife Molly, Christina VanGenderen and husband J.C., John Worley and fiancé Megan Maletta , Nick Murphy, Tasheena Hail and husband Jered, and Sasha Mayer. Surviving step-grandchildren are Chris Bowen and Misty Hewitt. Surviving great grandchildren are Ashley, Cody, Cameron, and Taylor Purdy, Rylan and Mason Warnick, Brendan, Nickolas, John, and Scott VanGenderen, and Macey Day. Steven is also survived by a brother, Paul Mayer and three sisters, Elizabeth Menke and her husband Eddie, Norma Mayer, and Janet Moore.
In addition to his wife, Steven was preceded in death by a daughter, Lori Ann Mayer, and a sister, Phyllis Mayer.
Funeral services for Steven Mayer will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Unionville, MO, on Friday, October 15, at 10:30 am with visitation on Thursday, October 14 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm with a Rosary at 7:30 pm. Interment will be in the Unionville Catholic Cemetery.
