Betty Lou Grimes, 85, of Unionville, MO, passed away at the Putnam County Memorial Hospital in Unionville on Sunday, November 14, 2010.
Betty Lou (Smith) Grimes was born near Leon, IA, on September 14, 1925, the daughter of Albert and Opal (Bennet) Smith who preceded her in death. She was reared in southern Iowa and on August 2, 1941 she married Cecil Grimes in Princeton, MO. He preceded her in death on October 31, 1999.
Betty and Cecil made their home in southern Iowa for many years where they farmed, mostly in Wayne County. They moved to Putnam County in 1957 where they continued to farm. Betty was a good farmer’s wife and a good mother to her five children. She and Cecil had a janitorial business in Moline, IL, from 1972-1977 and then returned to a farm in Putnam County. They moved to Unionville in 1995.
Betty was a loving mother and grandmother and her family was the center of her world. She also liked to raise a garden and cook. She was wonderful at baking pies. She also made quilts for each of her family members, customizing them for each one’s interests. She belonged to a county extension women’s club and also liked to attend card parties.
Betty is survived by her five children, Cecil (Junior) Grimes and wife Carolyn of Moline, IL; Jim Grimes and wife Carolyn of Unionville, MO; Janice Grimes of Moline, IL; Joyce Hydorn and husband Les of Unionville, MO; and Jenny Tammen and husband Al of Pleasant Valley, IA. Twelve grandchildren also survive: Dawna Holdren, Greg Grimes, Mark Grimes, Kristen Burns, Tonya Pipes, Troy Grimes, Shawn Hydorn, Tracy Meinecke, Tiffany Trent, Matt Grimes, and Cari Coudron. Nineteen great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren also survive. Surviving brothers and sisters are Clara Bain, Bob Smith, Marjorie Housh, Don Smith, Jean Williams, Jody Smith, Jackie Selby, Wanda Johnson, and Anna Waits.
Others who preceded Betty in death include a grandson, Todd Grimes, a brother, Leland Smith, and a sister, Virginia Smith.
Funeral services for Betty Lou Grimes will be at the Playle & Jones Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, on Friday, November 19, 2010, at 2:00 pm with a visitation on Thursday, November 18, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Burial will be in the Unionville Cemetery, Unionville, MO.
