Louis Edward Detwiler, 73 of Gibbs, Missouri passed away Thursday (December 2, 2010) at his home.
The son of Earl O. and Edna (Kenagy) Detwiler, he was born May 5, 1937 in Garden City, MO. On September 23, 1961 in Lincoln Park, MI he was united in marriage to Gloria B. Miller.
Louis grew up in Cherry Box, MO. He graduated from Hesston Academy in Hesston, KS in 1958. He then graduated from Kansas City Technical School in 1960. He worked for Honeywell in Detroit, MI from 1960 to 1972. He moved to Kirksville in August of 1972. He worked for Grim Smith Hospital in the maintenance department, as a dispatcher for the Adair County Sheriff’s Department, as a parts delivery for J. Burdman Auto Parts, and for HomeCare Medical of Kirksville until he retired in 2002. He owned and operated Detwiler Custom Woodcrafts.
He loved to work in his many gardens and keep up the 10 acres. No building project was too large, even having only one arm. He was very active in his church, faithful member and deacon of First Assembly of God in Kirksville.
Louis is survived by his wife, Gloria; three children, Mark E. Detwiler and wife Teresa A. (Stribling) of Troy, MO, Devin A. Detwiler and wife Carey of Newport, RI and Stacey L. Makari and husband Markus of Westminster, CO; six grandchildren, Rachel, Meghan and Thomas Detwiler, Macie Land, Jordan and Colby Platte; one brother, Waymond E. Detwiler and wife Leila of Leonardtown, MD and one sister, Betty M. McKim of Alamogordo, NM.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Linda M. Detwiler.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday (December 6, 2010) at Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home with Reverend Robert Fredricks officiating. A eulogy will be given by Danny Harrelson. Musical selections will be “He Is Faithful” and “There Ain’t No Grave Can Hold This Body Down” sang by his daughter, Stacey and a congregational hymn of “It Is Well With My Soul”. Burial will be in the Brethren Cemetery in Cherry Box, MO.
Pallbearers will be Dan Yager, Dave Carter, Lorne Arber, Tom Farwell, John Tuttle and Mike Spidle.
Visitation with the family will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the
Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home
