Andy Hume

December 3, 1951 — November 15, 2022

Andy Hume, 70, of Unionville, Missouri, passed away quietly but unexpectedly at his home on November 15, 2022.

John Andrew ("Andy") was born in Muscatine, Iowa, on December 3 rd , 1951, the son of Murl and Nellie (Hays) Hume. Other than brief times in other locations, Andy lived most of his life in and around Unionville, Missouri.  He graduated 8 th grade from Lemons School and was a graduate of UHS, class of 1969.

Andy was a big equipment operator for Missouri Mining.  Eventually, the constant heavy vibrations in the cab of his drag line permanently damaged his spinal column.  He could no longer work and suffered severe back pain for the rest of his life.  But that never stopped him from living life to its fullest.

Andy had many interests, especially growing and tending to his flowers and plants.  He was particularly proud of his 4 th generation irises that originally came from his great grandmother's homestead.  He had lots of berries which were made into jelly for family and friends.  He also provided berries for a family friend, Jay Randall, to use in his award-winning wines. Andy loved the outdoors... walking down his country road, fishing, hunting, and sitting outside in the evenings where he could listen to the tree frogs while he watched for deer and other wildlife.  He fed the squirrels so often, they would actually come up to him and tap him on the arm to let him know they were ready for food. Like his mother, Andy developed a love for antique buttons, appreciating the history behind them.  He had an enviable Collection that included buttons all the way from the roaring 20's to early Colonial America.

He was proud of his ability to live off-grid and enjoyed researching family history and genealogy.  But it was the family of today that he loved most, especially his nieces and nephews.  To them, he was just "Uncle" because, simply enough, he was the very definition of that word. Andy made a profession of faith in Jesus as Savior and was baptized at Omaha Baptist Church.  He loved his church family, and they loved him.  He was vital in the van ministry that picked up children for Wednesday nights and VBS.  He was also an effective trustee for the church and was vital to the construction of the new building.

Andy was preceded in death by his parents, his brother (and best friend) Dennis, beloved niece Lisa Kelley Michael, and two great nephews, Zachery and Bryson Nelson.

He is survived by two uncles, Jerry and Phil Steele; two sisters Peggy (Neal) Kelley of Bozeman, Montana, and Lois (Gene) Brummer of Unionville, Missouri; nieces Michele Hume (Edward), Amy Turpin (Cody), Mary Brummer (Doug), Kara Nelson (Aaron), and nephew Brian Brummer(Christina).  Also surviving are their children Matt, Michael, Hannah, Cade, Owen, Jaylee, Jonathon, Jesslyn, Jenna, Arek, Elliot, Kalea, Hayden, and Jackson.  Great grandnieces/nephews are Payton, Brody, Kamden, and Emma Jo.  Andy also leaves many cousins and a community full of lifelong friends.

A visitation in Andy’s honor will be held at Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home from 5:00 – 7:00 pm on Monday, Monday, November 21, 2022.  Inurnment will take place at a later date.  Memorials may be made to Omaha Baptist Church and entrusted with Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27 th St., Unionville, MO  63565.
