Betty Colene Smith, 87 of Kirksville passed away Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at Northeast Regional Medical Center.
The daughter of Richard Wayne and Martha Deloma (Rouse) Flanagan, she was born November 3, 1931 in Green Castle, Missouri area. On August 27, 1950 in Kirksville she was united in marriage to Leonard “Penny” Smith and he preceded her in death in 2005.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Gerald Flanagan.
Betty is survived by her children, Jean Stegmann and husband David of St. Louis, MO, Jackie Hinderliter and husband Dennis of St. Louis, MO, Joyce Painter and husband Dan of Fridley, MN, and Jeremy Smith and friend Mike Goldman of Quincy, IL; three grandsons, Eric Stegmann, Alec Painter and Andrew Hinderliter; three granddaughters, Katie Prinster and husband Andrew, Lucie Smith, and Maggie Painter; three great grandchildren Lyla Prinster, Lucas Prinster and Asher Sachs; one brother, Jake Flanagan and wife Doris of Newton, IA; four sister, Vita Jean Cleous of Wichita, KS, Ruth Griffin of Macon, MO, Rose Ravenscraft and husband Ralph of Hallsville, MO, and Deloris Tabor of Macon, MO; and one sister-in-law, Doris Flanagan of Marshalltown, IA; and also many nieces and nephews.
Betty moved to Kirksville at the age of 16 and worked at the Mayfair Café. On August 27, 1950, she married Penny Smith and they have four children. They spent their entire lives in Kirksville, where she attended the Church of the Nazarene.
Betty enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, Bible study, and was an excellent cook. She leaves behind many friends and will be sorely missed by her family.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 19, 2019 at Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 19, 2019 at Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home. Burial will be in Park View Memorial Gardens.
Memorials in memory of Betty are suggested to the Kirksville Church of the Nazarene.
