Billy Evans Pauley, son of Delbert and Mildred (Evans) Pauley, was born in Kirksville, MO, April 17, 1937 and departed this life May 28, 2018 at the Putnam County Care Center in Unionville, MO. He was 81 years old.
Bill grew up in the Powersville and Lucerne areas. He graduated from Newtown High School with the Class of 1955.
On June 21, 1959 he was united in marriage to Judy Mathews. This union was blessed with two sons.
Bill and Judy lived their entire married life in Unionville. Early on Bill worked for W.E. Ross and for Husted Funeral Home. Later he attended the Kirksville School of Cosmetology. Following his graduation, he and Judy opened Bill and Judy’s Corner of Beauty. They worked side by side in the shop for over 50 years. One of his favorite parts of the business was traveling to the Putnam County Care Center and styling the hair of his devoted customers who lived there. In the early 80’s Bill opened a silk flower business; B & J Flower Nook. He delighted in creating beautiful floral arrangements for any and all occasions.
Bill was a charter member of Broadlawn Baptist Church and was ordained there as a Deacon in May of 1969 – a position in which he proudly served until his death. He also taught the Preschool Sunday School class and served for many years as the song and choir leader for worship services. Bill loved to sing. It was one of the great joys of his life. He especially loved to sing with the men’s quartet at Broadlawn. He dearly loved his church family.
Bill was deeply committed to, and served an active role in, the community of Unionville where he chose to live. He served on the board of the Putnam County Senior Center from shortly after it’s opening until 2016, and on the board of the Putnam County Historical society for many years. In the summer of 2017 he and Judy were inducted into the Missouri 4-H Hall of Fame in honor of their service to the 4-H clubs of Putnam County. Fifty years’ worth of kids will also recognize Bill’s as the familiar face of Santa’s Helper.
Bill is survived by Judy, his loving wife of nearly 59 years; two sons, Gregory and his wife Joyce of Centralia, MO and Jeffery of the home; two grandsons, Nathaneal and his wife Kelly of Villa Park, IL and Joshua and his wife Jenny of Overland Park, KS; and a sister, June and husband Keith Smith of the Putnam County Care Center in Unionville as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews whom he loved to tease endlessly and tell mildly embarrassing stories about whenever he got a chance. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Claudine Collins and brother-in-law Bob Collins; brother-in-law and sister-in law, James and Betty Mathews; and brother-in-law John Neal Mathews. He leaves behind a wonderful memory of faith, love and care for his family, church, community and friends that will live on for a lifetime.
