Charles Atkinson

Charles Atkinson, 87, of Queen City passed away Saturday, May 27, 2017, in the Harry S. Truman Veterans Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.

The son of Arthur and Clorene Atkinson he was born November 11, 1929, in Winterset, Iowa. At two years of age he moved with his parents to Glenwood, Missouri and was raised in the Schuyler County area where he attended rural school. Charles attended the Queen City High School graduating with the class of 1947. In 1948 he joined the United States Marines serving with honor in Korea in the 1950s. He was honorably discharged in 1956.

Charles lived in New York for a while after the service and then moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he worked as a cement finisher for many years. In 1993 he retired and moved back to Queen City.

He is survived by two children, a brother Bob Atkinson and wife Alma, of Queen City, two nieces Jani Bailey and husband Mike of Greentop and Brenda Sidwell and husband Sidney of Queen City, and four great nieces, one who was very special to him, Autumn Bailey, and five great nephews.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Mary Ann Miller, and a niece Becky Stamer.

He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Kirksville, a lifetime member of the VFW, and a member of the American Legion.
Charles enjoyed church fellowship and eating out with family, friends, and friends from the Health and Fitness Center.

Visitation will be held Thursday (June 1, 2017) from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. in the Dooley Funeral Home, in Queen City, with a memorial service to follow at 6:30 p.m. with Pastor Sonny Smyser officiating.
