Charles Edward Cooper, a beloved figure whose diverse career and unwavering dedication to family and community touched many lives, passed away suddenly at his home on March 8, 2025, at the age of 69. Born on March 2, 1956, Charles was a lifelong resident of Greentop Missouri, where he built a legacy that spanned various professions, including farmer, police officer, deputy sheriff, and arson investigator, before ultimately embracing entrepreneurship with his own heating and cooling business.
A proud graduate of Adair County R-2 in Brashear, Missouri, Charles continued his pursuit of knowledge at Truman State University, completing his degree in Criminal Justice in 1983. His commitment to serving others was evident in every role he assumed, and he brought a passion for justice and community safety wherever he went.
Charles was an avid Mason, finding great joy in the fellowship and camaraderie that came from being part of the Knights Templar. This special connection to community and brotherhood only amplified his giving spirit and determination to make a difference in the lives of those around him.
In his leisure time he enjoyed going to cardinal games with his daughter, spending time with his family and relaxing at home with his dogs as well as hunting quail and pheasants which gave him the opportunity to enjoy all aspects of nature and life. His laughter and warmth filled the hearts of those lucky to know him and his love for his family was deeply felt by his wife Janet and daughter Stephanie of Columbia.
He is also survived by his cherished nieces Annie Bushnell, Michelle McCormick, and Kimberly Steen, along with his nephew, Matthew McAuley. His loyal companions, Molly and Penny the dogs and Tazer the cat, were never far from his side, sharing in both the quiet moments of life and the joyful celebrations.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Horace Cooper and Helen Miller, who provided him with love and support throughout his life along with his sister Cheryl MCauley. Their memory lives on through the values he held dear and the lessons he imparted to his family.
The family will hold visitation at Playle-Rimer-Millard Family Funeral Chapel in Kirksville, MO, on March 16, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at the same location starting at 3:00 PM.
In celebrating the life of Charles Edward Cooper, may we remember a man of great integrity, a loving husband and father, and a steadfast friend, whose spirit lives on in all the lives he touched. Memorials may be left to the Masonic Temple or the Kirksville Kiwinis.
