Dannie Loren Smith

Dannie Smith, 77, of Unionville, Missouri, passed away suddenly at his home on Tuesday, February 18, 2020. He had been in failing health for several years.

Dannie Loren Smith was born in Washington, Iowa, on December 6, 1942, the son of Lawrence and Twyla (Baugher) Smith, who preceded him in death. The family moved to Putnam County, Missouri, when Dannie was a toddler. They lived north of Hartford for a while and then moved to Lemons. Dannie started school at Lemons and went there his first three grades of school. The family moved to Unionville in 1951 and Dannie attended Unionville Grade School and graduated from Unionville High School in 1960.

Dannie married Karen Myers in Unionville on November 18, 1962, and she survives at home. Dannie joined his father in operating Smith Mill & Elevator and in the feed and grain business for several years, and they also had a farming operation. He began working as a water plant operator for the city of Unionville in 1979 and worked there for almost 28 years before retiring in 2007. Dannie enjoyed riding his touring motorcycle and traveled to many states as well as Mexico and Canada. He liked to collect guns and was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and the Kansas City Chiefs. At one time Dannie and Karen enjoyed camping and hiking in Sate Parks. Dannie was a member of the Unionville First Christian Church.

In addition to his wife, Dannie is survived by three sons: Bryan (Linda) Smith of Unionville, Missouri; David Smith of Perry, Iowa; and Scott Smith (special friend, Jessie) of St. Paul, Minnesota. His five grandchildren are Shanna Osgood, Cody Smith, Kaitlynn Smith, Sabrina Smith, and Kristina Smith, and his great grandson is Victor Osgood. Dannie is also survived by a brother, Duane (Mary Lou) Smith of Unionville, Missouri, and a sister, Elaine (Richard Mayfield) Smith-Widner of Dillon, Montana.

Dannie was also preceded in death by a sister, Marina Tharp.

Funeral services for Dannie Smith will be at Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home in Unionville, Missouri, at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 22, 2020, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Rose Cemetery east of Unionville.
