Dorothy Myre, 83, formerly of Unionville, MO, passed away at Mason Pointe Center in Chesterfield, MO, on Tuesday, October 3, 2017. She had been a resident there for six years.
Dorothy Pearl (Smith) Myre was born in Richland, MO, on December 19, 1933, the daughter of Pearl A. and Geneva G. (Geist) Smith, who preceded her in death. She graduated from Unionville High School in 1951 and worked briefly as a bookkeeper before joining the United States Army in 1953 where she served as a dental assistant at Ft. Riley, KS. It was there that she met Don Myre and they were married in Unionville, MO, on April 10, 1955.
Dorothy and Don returned to Don’s home state of Michigan after their service in the Army and Dorothy worked as a secretary at GM until their son, Paul, came along. She was then a stay-at-home mom. Dorothy and Don were active in helping to plant Southern Baptist churches in Michigan. The Myres added daughter Margaret to the family and in 1969 they bought the Tastee Freeze in Unionville, MO, and moved back to Dorothy’s home town. Dorothy and Don opened Don’s Hickory House in 1972 and it became a popular place in the surrounding Unionville area. The Myres sold the business in 1986 and soon after moved to Bridgeton, MO, where they worked as house parents at Missouri Baptist Children’s home. They were involved in this ministry until retiring in 1998 and moving back to Unionville. They moved to Chesterfield in 2010 to be closer to family.
Dorothy was a fun person to be around. She had an infectious laugh and she loved people; but her passion was ministering to youth. She was active in the youth ministry at First Baptist Church in Unionville where she taught Sunday school, led youth Bible studies in her home and was generally engaged in many other youth activities. She also like to read and listen to music, especially gospel and big band music. She was a hard working wife and mother and a wonderful business and life partner with Don.
Dorothy is survived by her son Paul (Cathy) Myre of Chesterfield, MO; and daughter Margaret Kiser of Unionville, MO. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Darren Kiser, Megan Kiser, Alli Myre, Andrea Kiser, Allison Doering, Michelle Doering, and Zach Myre. Five great grandchildren survive as well as a brother, Jim (Fay) Smith of Tucson, AZ, and a sister, Nancy (Bill) Cummins of Unionville, MO.
Dorothy was preceded in death by four sisters: Stella Maulsby McFarland, Maxine Osterberg, Donna Fisher, and Lois Munden. She was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Cathy Johnson Myre.
