Eldred E. Palmer passed away Monday (November 12, 2018) at 101 years of age in Fairfield, Iowa. He moved to The Oaks, an assisted living in 2013 to be close to his youngest grandson. He had spent all of his life in Greentop, Missouri, until moving to Iowa.
He was the son of Virgil and Addie Mae (Sawyer) Palmer. Eldred’s mother died when Eldred was three years old. At the time of their mother’s death Eldred and his two older brothers, Kenneth and Claron, lived with their grandparents Lewis and Margaret (Kendall) Palmer. Their father, Virgil, worked at the Wabash Railroad Yard in Moberly, Missouri, and died in an accident at work in 1939.
On August 26, 1938, Eldred was married to Virginia Ray Sloop. To this union one son, Billy Gene Palmer was born.
Eldred was preceded in death by his parents, his son Billy Gene in 1982, his wife Virginia in 1984, two older brothers and wives, Claron and Mae (Wilson) Palmer, and Kenneth and Iscel (Sevits) Palmer. His mother-in-law and husband Stella and Leonard Fisher, father-in-law Ivan Glen Sloop, sister-in-law and husband Margaret (Knittel) and Frank Young, brother-in-law and wife Kenneth and Dorothy (Kelley) Knittel, two nephews Laverne Palmer and Kenneth Palmer Jr., and two nieces Margaret Ann (Young) Schutte and Julie (Knittel) Zentner.
He is survived by four grandsons and wives; Shane and and Jeanie (Bollinger) Palmer of Fairfield, Iowa, Kelly Palmer of Charlotte, North Carolina, Stacey and Pam (Bullock) Palmer, of Charlotte, North Carolina and Terry and Stephanie (Bauer) Palmer of Appleton, Wisconsin, his daughter-in-law Patsy Angstead and husband Kenneth of Fairfield, Iowa. He is also survived by great grandchildren Megan and Paige Palmer, T.J. and Quinn Palmer and Jessica Palmer, and one niece Susan (Knittel) Forney of Spring Valley, Illinois, and one nephew Frank Young Jr. of Gilbert, Arizona.
Eldred worked for 42 years in the parts department in Greentop and Kirksville for Peterson Chevrolet and later for Jim Robertson Chevrolet/Toyota in Kirksville.
Eldred loved to bowl and bowled on several bowling leagues in Kirksville., over the years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Greentop. He was an over sixty year member of Greentop Masonic Lodge #635 AF & AM and Emerald Ray Chapter 158 O.E.S. He was also a member of the Kirksville Shrine.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday (November 17, 2018) in the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home with Pastor Homer Poor officiating. Burial will be in the Greentop Cemetery.
Pallbearers will Terry Palmer, T. J. Palmer, Quinn Palmer, Shane Palmer, Lala Prough, and John Robinson.
Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 am Saturday (November 17, 2018) in the Davis Playle Hudson Rimer Funeral Home in Kirksville, Missouri.
