Harold Monroe Wellman

Harold Wellman, 93, of Putnam County, MO, passed away at his daughter’s home near Blue Springs, MO, on April 5, 2018.

Harold Monroe Wellman was born in Putnam County, MO, on December 23, 1924, the son of Clyde Homer and Mabel (Cowan) Wellman, who preceded him in death. He attended rural schools in Putnam County and three years of high school in Martinstown before graduating from Kirksville Missouri High School. After high school he enlisted in the United States Navy in September of 1943 and was honorably discharged in December, 1945. He was stationed in Panama as a radio-man C-3. Harold enrolled in Kirksville State Teachers College (now Truman State University) after he returned from the service. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Education and then began a teaching career that spanned over 33 years, many at Unionville High School. He retired from teaching in 1984.

Harold married Neta Marie Hatfield in Kirksville, MO, on June 2, 1952. Three children were born to this union: Alan, Linda, and Roger. He liked to go deer hunting and fishing with his sons and loved to do woodworking in his shop.

Harold is survived by his wife of 65 years. He is also survived by two sons, Alan Wellman and wife Karen of Kennewick, WA, and Roger Wellman and wife Kim of Independence, MO; and one daughter, Linda McCormick and husband Mike of Greenwood, MO. His six grandchildren are Chad Smith, Jaclyn Maloney, Megan Wellman, Nathan Wellman, Kristie (Nate) Clark, and Lisa (Nathaniel) Wassing. He is also survived by 12 great grandchildren and a brother, Jack Wellman of Kirksville, MO.

Harold was preceded in death by four brothers, George, Fred, Robert, and Wilbur; and one sister, Margaret.

He will be sadly missed by all, especially grandkids and great grandkids who loved coming to the farm.

Funeral services for Harold Wellman will be at Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, at 2:00 pm, on Sunday, April 8, 2018. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Lone Pine Cemetery, Martinstown, MO.

Memorials are suggested to the Martinstown Community Building and may be entrusted with Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO 63565.
