December 23, 1919 — January 14, 2022

Harvey B. Young Jr., 102, of Kirksville, Missouri passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, January 14, 2022.

Harvey was born on December 23, 1919, in Kirksville, MO, to the late Harvey B. Young Sr. and Frances Vail Young. His passing was preceded by his wife of 55 years Jane Clinton Young who passed on May 28, 1998, and his son Harvey B. Young III (Trey) and survived by Trey’s wife, Kathryn Hogenson Young (who passed on January 31, 2022). Harvey was also preceded in death by his special friend Dorothy (Dottie) Davidson from Hannibal.

Harvey attended Kirksville school systems and graduated from Kirksville High School in 1937. He continued his education at Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (Truman State University) from 1937 to 1940 where he was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity and then attended University of Missouri from 1940 to 1941 where he joined Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He then worked for Aero Parts Inc. in Wichita, Kansas where he met his wife Ella Jane Clinton (Jane). Harvey and Jane were married on April 16, 1943 in Iowa. That same year he enlisted in the Army Air Core, became a pilot, and was stationed in the South Pacific. His many war stories kept us all entertained for many years to come.

After the war he returned home to meet his son Harvey Burton Young III (Trey) who was born in Wichita, KS, January of 1945 during his tour overseas. Harvey and his growing family returned to Kirksville, MO to work at the Bank of Kirksville later becoming the Executive Vice President in 1951 and President in 1962. Harvey and Jane added one more to the family when they adopted baby Susan Jane Young in 1957. Harvey’s love for flying didn’t leave him after the war, he piloted many trips taking his wife and family all over the United States. Harvey and Jane explored many continents and cultures before splitting their time between Fort Meyers, FL and Kirksville. After 55 years of marriage, Jane passed following a lengthy battel with cancer in 1998.

Over the years Harvey became very involved in the business life of his hometown helping to bring new businesses to the area, such as Hollister Incorporated. He served on the boards of many organizations within the community including; Sheltered Workshop, Salvation Army, Chamber or Commerce, United Way, Red Cross Advisory Council and many more. He was also involved in multiple groups including; Kiwanis for 65 years, The State Board of Education-appointed by two different Governors, and many others. He was very proud of the work he did for Kirksville and remained involved long after his retirement from the Bank. He was proud of his commitment to the Inclusion Playground at the local YMCA. After retirement he became an avid golfer wining many trophies and tournaments over the 30 years he played. He was a staple of the Kirksville Country Club and a worthy opponent both on the green and in the club, house playing cards.  In later years he enjoyed a great deal of social time at the Shrine Club, where he enjoyed helping with weekly bingo games as a way to give back.  Giving back to his community was an important value he believed in and passed on to all he knew.
