Howard Donald Baldwin

Howard D. Baldwin, 91, of Unionville, MO, passed away at the Putnam County Memorial Hospital in Unionville on Wednesday, January 2, 2019.

Howard Donald Baldwin was born near Mendota, MO, on September 21, 1927, the son of George Dewey and Grace Fern (Campbell) Baldwin, who preceded him in death. He was reared in eastern Putnam County, working in the coal mines from age 12 through his teen age years, and graduating from Livonia High School in 1946. He then joined the United States Army. Howard married Glennis Stull on April 27, 1948, and she survives at home. Howard worked for several area farmers after his discharge from the service.

Howard and Glennis moved to Ottumwa, IA, in 1952, where he worked for Sutherland Lumber Company until 1973, when he accepted a job as a road maintainer and welder for Wapello County, Ottumwa, IA, from 1973 until his retirement in 1989. Howard and his brother Junior worked rebuilding salvaged motors. Howard was an avid coon hunter, owning several dogs, as well as judging many fox hunts. He and Junior judged several dog trials and hunts all across Missouri and southern Iowa. Howard also liked to ride mules and trained jumping mules that he used in his coon hunts. He and Glennis took several trail rides and enjoyed going to Eminence, MO, often. Howard was a long-time member of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church in Chariton, MO, where he attended with his family and loved to sing. He also attended Northgate Alliance Church while living in Ottumwa.

In addition to his wife, Glennis, Howard is survived by three children: Galen (Connie) Baldwin, of Livonia, MO; Glenda (Roger) Weirbach, of Ottumwa, IA, and Garnet Scobee, of Unionville, MO; His grandchildren are Zachary (Jennifer) Stout, Clint (Mika) Weirbach, Danyle (Jeremy) Riley, Caleb Stout, Heather Husley, and Gail Scobee. He is also survived by 16 great grandchildren and a sister, Louise Mikels of Unionville, MO, as well as several nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Patty Baldwin, of Battlefield, MO.

Preceding Howard in death was a brother, Junior Baldwin, a sister, Mary Martin, a son-in-law, Garold Scobee, and a grandson, Lon Slycord.

Funeral services for Howard Baldwin will be at Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home on Sunday, January 6, 2019, at 1:30 pm with visitation from 5:00 – 7:00 pm on Saturday, January 5. Interment will be at the Martinstown Cemetery.
