James Black, 61, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2018, in Pella, Iowa.
The son of Cletus and Dorthea (Dean) Black, he was born August 17, 1956, in Kirksville, Missouri. He grew up in rural Queen City and attended Jimtown and Queen City Elementary Schools and graduated from Schuyler R-I High School in Lancaster with the class of 1975.
After High School he worked in Pella, Iowa, at Vermeer Manufacturing for two years. He then moved to Berryville, Virginia, where he worked in construction and masonry with two of his brothers for some time. He also worked for Burger King for ten years and then the Winchester Medical Center for seventeen years before failing health caused him to retire. At this time he moved to Pella, Iowa, to live with his brother Henry.
James was the youngest of ten children and is survived by three sisters; Charlotte Burnell and husband George Swinderman of Queen City, MO, Dora Warden of Marshall, MO, and Erma Sorenson and husband Ralph of Harvey, IA, three brothers: Henry Black of Pella, IA, Cletus Black Jr. and wife Trina of Berryville, VA, and J.P. Black and wife Barb of Renick, WV; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters; Roberta Glaspie and Susan West, a brother in infancy, and two nephews; Terry Whittom and John Burnell.
He attended the Berryville, VA Baptist Church. James was an avid fisherman and hunter.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Saturday with.funeral service held at 1:00 pm Saturday (January 20, 2018) in the Dooley Funeral Home with Pastor Roger Bushnell officiating. Burial will be in Queen City Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Daniel Sorenson, Richard Black, Jeff Watson, Loren Burnell, Tony Glaspie, Dominic Black, and Ron McElhinney.
