James Edward Brackney

James Edward Brackney, 90 of Kirksville passed away Friday, May 1, 2020 at the in the loving arms of the staff at the LaPlata Nursing Home. Unfortunately his family could not be there due to Covid- 19 and took comfort that he was with people who loved and cared for him.

The son of Pearl E. and Opal Leona (Adkins) Brackney, he was born May 17, 1929 in Kirksville, Missouri. On December 1, 1950 in Centerville, Iowa he was united in marriage to Jean L. Saner.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Sharon Martorana and husband Bob of Hot Springs, AR; four grandchildren, Daniel Curtis, Stephanie Bauer, Bethany Marcol, and Brian Martorana; Eight great Grandchildren; sisters, Beverly Johnson of LaPlata, MO and Arlene Mills of Niceville, FL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jean, two daughters, Shannon Curtis and Susan Brackney and sisters, Betty Kunster and Anna Ware.

Jim or “Sarge” was employed by Missouri Power and Light co, served 20 plus years in the Missouri National Guard and a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge. He took an early retirement and spent his time hunting, fishing and going to many casinos. The rest of his time was spent traveling to see family and tending to his beloved garden. Because his theory for gardening, was, more is better, Instead of 10 zucchini plants, he would plant 50. Needless to say, he always had plenty to share with anyone.

Jim wishes were to be cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family asked that donations be made in the name of James to the Missouri Department of Conservation via the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation, 330 Commerce Dr. Jefferson City Mo. 65109.
