Jay Melvin Munden

February 13, 1934 — August 26, 2017

Jay Melvin Munden, 83, passed away on Saturday, August 26, 2017, at the Putnam County Care Center.  He was born February 13, 1934, in Putnam County on a farm east of Unionville, MO.  He was the son of Burl M. and Dulcie M. (Small) Munden, who preceded him in death.  He graduated from Livonia High School in 1951.  Jay was united in marriage to Betty L. Watt on November 15, 1959, in Kirksville, MO.   To this union came three children, Robert, Sandra, and Sharon.

Jay was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1956 to 1958 and later with the National Guard. During his military service he received the Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged.  He worked numerous jobs throughout his early life.  He farmed for 58 years on the family farm near Lucerne, MO.   Jay volunteered as a 4-H Leader, served as the PTA President, West Putnam School Board member, Putnam County R-1 School Board President, the Medicine Township Board and the Putnam County Farm Service Agency as a field services agent and on the County Committee.   He was a member of the First Christian Church, Unionville, MO.  Jay enjoyed his grandchildren, great grandchildren, reading, draft horses, Case Tractors, and the Putnam County Fair. He never met a stranger and always enjoyed good conversations.

Survivors include his wife, Betty of 58 years, and their three children, Robert (Sherry) Munden, Unionville, MO, Sandra (Tim) Karsten, Jefferson City, MO, and Sharon Munden, Webster Groves, MO.  He is also survived by five grandchildren Kristin (Tim) Wood, Martinstown, Kylle (Stephanie) Munden, Woodland Park, CO, Klayton Munden, Unionville, MO, John and Paul Karsten, Jefferson City, MO, and two great-grand-children Albany and Bowdy Wood.   He is also survived by two sisters Jennie Farris, Ashland, MO, and Wanda Hardin, Hallsville, MO, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers James Munden and Jean Munden.

Jay’s funeral service will be at the Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home on Saturday, September 2 nd at 11:30am.  Visitation will begin at 10:00am the same day.  Interment will at the Unionville Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Unionville 1 st Christian Church or Hospice of North East Missouri and may be entrusted to the Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO  63565.
