Joanne Harwood

October 3, 1929 — December 10, 2018

Joanne Therese Harwood, 89, of Kirksville died Monday, December 10, at Twin Pines Adult Care Center.  She was born October 3, 1929, in Everett, Massachusetts, the only daughter of Sarah Carr Harwood and Harold E.  Harwood.  Her two brothers, Harry and Jimmy, predeceased her.

As a young woman, Joanne worked as a secretary for the Boston Globe.  She moved west to further her career and to be closer to her brother Harry and his family.  One of her most interesting experiences was supporting the work of the Viking Project to Mars at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.  Later in life, she worked at Pasadena City College.  She retired to the Kirksville area and worked as a volunteer with Trinity Episcopal Church and the Area Office on Aging. She enjoyed her pets, knitting, getting to know people, and having a good laugh.  She was a long-time member of Trinity Episcopal where she enjoyed being part of the annual food drive for Christian Community Food Depot at HyVee and contributing to the church Mitten Tree for the Salvation Army.  She will be greatly missed.

Joanne is survived by her niece, Leslie Harwood, and her nephews, Steven Harwood and Harry Harwood, all of California, and their families.

According to her wishes, Ms. Harwood was cremated and her ashes sent to her family.  A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Kirksville.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Joanne Harwood Memorial Fund at Trinity Episcopal Church.
