Leroy Clark Elliott

April 1, 1938 — December 21, 2017

LeRoy Elliott, 79, of Unionville, MO, passed away at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, IA, on Thursday, December 21, 2017, after an 18 year battle with cancer.

LeRoy Clark Elliott was born in Chula, MO, on April 1, 1938, the son of James Lee and Lena Katherine (Browning) who preceded him in death.  He was later reared by his grandparents, James and Mabel Browning and he graduated from Hughesville High School.  LeRoy married Lillian Tingley in Unionville, MO, on May 14, 1958, and she survives at home.

LeRoy began his working career by farming in Putnam County with Dick Williamson.  He then worked at the foundry in Centerville, IA, before embarking on a 30 year career with John Deere in Ottumwa, IA, in 1962.  LeRoy worked as a custodian at Putnam County R-1 schools after retirement from Deere and retired from that job only recently.

LeRoy loved to do yard work and garden at his home.  He liked to raise flowers and liked everything done “just right.”  LeRoy and Lillian raised their grandchildren and now great grandchildren and they were the focus of LeRoy’s life.  He loved children and helped lead the Royal Rangers at the Unionville Assembly of God church where he was a faithful member.  LeRoy had an easy going manner and liked people.  He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and also enjoyed football.  He once bowled in a league in Unionville.  He liked western movies and enjoyed listening to western and gospel music.

In addition to his wife of almost 60 years, LeRoy is survived by his son, Chancie Elliott of Trenton, MO, and his grandchildren, Marquetta, Jenny, James “Rudy,” Jeremy, and Faith.  His great grandchildren are Trevor, Matthew, Kyle, Erica, Christopher, and Axel.  Leroy is also survived by a brother, Jerry Elliott of Lake Tahoe, NV, and a sister, Carolyne Callen of the state of Florida, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Others who preceded LeRoy in death are a granddaughter, Joni Elliott,  his sister, Shirley, his in-laws, Howard and Alice Cooley, and his Browning grandparents who raised him.
