Pamela Kay Spencer Stokes’ Joyful Obituary
This is not to be about Pam but to declare and give thanks to God for His mercy and love and light in allowing us, his children, the grace to reflect His joy and peace and love to others.
Pamela Kay Spencer Stokes, age 63, of Columbia, Missouri passed away at her home on March 10, 2019, after a courageous and grace-filled battle with Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS).
Pam, born February 18, 1956, in Kirksville, Missouri, was the fifth of six beloved daughters of Edward Earl and Georgia Myrtle (Clark) Spencer.
Pam spent most of her life in rural Knox County, Missouri. She attended Novelty Elementary and Knox County High School. She graduated from Northeast Missouri State University with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and a Master's degree in English from Truman State University.
On June 14, 1974, in La Plata, Missouri, she married the love of her life: Kent Stokes.
Pam's greatest joys in life were being a loving wife, joyful mother (and grandmother) and going to church with heartfelt hymn singing, inspired preaching, and beloved brethren. Pam was an active member of the Mt. Tabor Primitive Baptist Church near Hurdland, Missouri since 1961.
Pam and Kent have been blessed above and beyond measure with best friends, neighbors, family, and church brethren. God has brought so many lovely and loving people into their lives. God heard their fervent prayers and gifted them with three precious children. Pam delighted in being the most creative and joy-filled mom she could be, instilling a love for God, music of all kinds and books, which she loved reading aloud and was known to give to others.
Pam enjoyed being a math coach for 4th-6th graders for many years. She loved people, which showed in her eyes, in her smile and in heartfelt warmth which helped her enjoy the healing Reflexology work that she did for 25 years. Her joy in the Lord shone through as she found each special client. Most of her clients were Christian and she loved to share God with them and sang A LOT. She was blessed to have many Amish clients and remained close friends with several.
Pam loved birds, butterflies, hearts, and the beauty of nature: the Redwoods, color, clouds, and thunder—the Voice of God. She loved life and often said, "Life is canvas, make sure you throw lots of paint on it.”
Pam was preceded in death by her parents of La Plata, Missouri; her father- and mother-in-law, George and Maurine Stokes; her brother-in-law Alvin Henderson; and sister-in-law Judith Griffith.
She is survived by her husband, Kent Stokes; her three children: Daniel and Shannon Stokes, Kellen and Jessica Stokes, and Sarah and Cliff Duren; five sisters: Bonnie Henderson and Joe Moyer, Beverly and Ronnie Talbert, Charlotte and David Parrish, Patty and Alan Thrasher, Marsha and Brian Harp; brother-in-law Keith and Shirley Stokes; six grandchildren: Ethan Guest, Carson Stokes, Aiden Stokes, Jovee, Kota, and Jia Stokes; nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, church brethren, and special friends.
Visitation will be Wednesday, March 13, 2019 from 10-12. Funeral service will be held later that same day at 1:30. Both the visitation and service will be held at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Chapel, Kirksville, Missouri and officiated by Elders Alan Curtis and Bill Wood.
Burial will be in the Mt. Tabor Cemetery near Hurdland, MO.
Casket bearers will be Danny Bull, Darin Henderson, Bruce Jackson, Chris Talbert, Dillon Jackson, and Jim Daugherty.
For those who wish to leave a memorial in memory of Pam, the family suggests her home church, Mt. Tabor. Memorials may be left or mailed to the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Chapel, 2100 E. Shepherd Ave, Kirksville, MO 63501.
