Phyllis Pauline (Jackson) Van Vleck was born on January 31, 1945 in Independence, Missouri. She passed away at University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri on November 26, 2017.
Phyllis was born in Independence while her father worked for the war effort during World War II. Shortly after she was born, her parents purchased a farm near Browning, Missouri. They then moved to a farm near Winigan, Missouri in Adair County. She was baptized at the Winigan Baptist Church and was devoted to her Christian faith throughout her life. She attended three one room schools (Kent, Willow Branch, and Morelock). She then attended Benton School after her parents moved to Kirksville. While she did not complete high school she did get her GED later in life to better her family.
After getting married, she lived near Kirksville in Adair County and for a few years in Schuyler County before returning to Adair for the remainder of her life. Phyllis lived for many years in Kirksville then spent the past 16 years living close to her son near Greentop. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church at the time of her death and enjoyed reading her bible.
Phyllis held many jobs including being a waitress, a maid, doing child care out of her home, as a cook and later an assistant director at Countryside Rehab Center. However, she was most proud of her work as a mother and wife. She was an outstanding cook and was at her best and happiest when caring for children. Her sons credit her hard work and care for their success and the subsequent success of her grandchildren.
Phyllis is the daughter of Doris (Baugher) Jackson and Dalton Jackson who preceded her in death. She was married in 1962 to Earl Van Vleck until his death in 2006. She was also preceded in death by her daughter-in-law Kelly Lynn (Baybo) Van Vleck, the wife of her oldest son, Thom.
She is survived by her three brothers, their wives, and many nieces and nephews: Leroy Jackson (Darlene) of Moberly, Wayne Jackson (Linda) of Kirksville, and Phil Jackson (Jackie) of Grand Junction, Colorado.
Phyllis is survived by her two sons, Thom (fiancée Michelle Bowdish) and Tedd. Thom Van Vleck is the father of her granddaughter Morgan and two grandsons Dalton and Ethan. Tedd Van Vleck of Ft Worth, Texas is the father of two more grandsons, Caleb and Brady.
Phyllis was cremated and will be interred at the Half Rock Cemetery in southeast Mercer County next to her husband and her sister Bonnie that died at birth. A visitation with family will be held at Faith Lutheran Church on Friday December 1, 2017 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm with a service to immediately follow. This will be officiated by Pastor David Lukefahr.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Morgan Van Vleck, Dalton Van Vleck, Ethan Van Vleck, Caleb Van Vleck, Brady Van Vleck, Ivan Bowdish, and Logan Bowdish.
